Don't get me wrong, I completely appreciate that and I know for a fact that without them most of the shows I watch now wouldn't exist or at least not in the form they are now. I just mean that with so much hype surrounding both of them I was expecting a bit more from them.
The points and themes addressed in both are great even now when those ideas have been recycled many times over by more recent media. It's more the story that I was disappointed by. I can't recall my reasons for disliking Akira as it was a while ago but GitS seemed to end really abruptly as if it ended half way through the film and I didn't feel like any progress had been made developing the story.
I suppose that's the thing with expectations though. If you go into something expecting it to be great and it's only "okay" then you will persevere it as being bad.
Yeah, you really have to control you expectations on things. Particularly older shows and movies.
