What animes have you guys been watching lately?

It's on my list so I'll get there eventually. It just might take me a while. It was the same with Death note (Obviously not as old but still). I put it off for ages and then when I finally did watch it I enjoyed it. Funnily enough it's a very similar situation to what I have with The original Blade Runner movie (Which I've been told has quite a few similarities) No matter how many times I try to watch that I seem to fail despite knowing that it's meant to be a good film.

As for things I've been watching, I finished Chain Chronicle which I probably wouldn't recommend to anyone and then went on to watch Recovery of an MMO Junkie which wasn't the kind of thing I'd normally go for but it was video game related so I gave it a watch and it wasn't too bad and now I'm watching Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, I'm only two episodes in but it seems all right.

Oh and a bit of a guilty pleasure but I also watched the Sword Art movie over Christmas. I went in with low expectations but was pleasantly surprised.

I feel like I should get some award for most Anime binged. I do have a life, I swear! 😅

Death Note is kind of shit. Like some of the characters are interesting but it'd be a more compelling story told all from L's perspective I think.
I can't ever get through SteinsGate as an anime. I bought to VN and hope that will work better for me.

I tried Recovery and didn't like it enough to keep going. RoB has an unusual budget for what it is. It's interesting to see. I'm not seeing much this season besides more Overlord. But I haven't checked off Crunchyroll yet.

I don't know, I quite liked the first half Though I'll definitely agree that it fell through after Near and Mello show up.

I finished S1 of RoB and it was also pretty enjoyable, a little disappointed that the second season doesn't focus on Favaro but it is what it is, I'll hold off on watching that until there's a dub available. I really do need to commit to watching the subbed versions as there are so many things I want to watch that don't have dubs (Re:creators, Overlord 2, Konosuba, Re:zero)

Not too sure what I'm going to watch next. Perhaps Violet Evergarden. Not sure if I'm going to like it but I'm also going to try watching A silent voice when I get a chance too.

I recently watched Kakegurui, Little Witch Academia & Problem children from another world. There's a lot of new stuff that I'm really looking forward to watching but I've decided to wait until after the season ends before I start so I can binge it all at once rather than having to wait for weekly episodes. These are the ones I'm interested in:

Darling in the Franxx, Death march to the parallel world, Hakata Tonkotsu Ramens, Overlord 2 and Violet Evergarden

I'm pretty sure they're all more than half complete at this point so not long to wait now.

Overlord is great. Go ahead and start it. They did kind of a filler arch to start with but it introduces a major character for later.

Darling in the Franxx is a little slow to start. It has what seems like a lot of fan service but this is actually part of the plot. If you can get by it I feel like it will pay off. They are running the risk of just turning into a pervy mecha anime but they have a chance of doing something fairly high concept as well.

Death March is one of my favorites right now. It is also a little weird. Very SAO but seem a lot like it was done by a Chinese anime group rather than a Japanese to begin with before it gets into more classic troupes. This is another one that could be great or could just be another run in the mill. Have to wait and see.

I recently realized Ancient Magnus' Bride is running again. Which I think is honestly one of the best thing on.

Record of the Greatcreast Wars is a pretty solid show.

I have been meaning to get back to Digimon Tri.

I haven't started Hakata but it's on the list.

Violet Evergarden is set for Spring on CR so I'm just waiting on that one.

I really enjoyed season 1 of Overlord so I'm definitely looking forward to that one. Not sure what it's like on the subbed side but we're waiting on six more episodes on the dub before the season is complete. As soon as they've aired it will be the first thing on my list.

I've intentionally avoided anything regarding Death March so I can go into it fresh but I'm hoping it's going to be good.

Funny you mentioned that about Magnus, I literally added it to my watch list a few hours before reading your post. It does look quite interesting so I'll definitely look into that.

I had no idea Digimon was still a thing aha, I tried watching the OG anime a few years back and it was pretty cringy, don't think I managed more than a few episodes before I gave up on it but that was before I properly fell down the anime rabbit hole so I might revisit it.

Sub side Overlord is airing currently week to week.
Record of Grancrest War is better translation of the title of the anime I suggested.

Yeah, they brought Digimon back and aged the kids to be in or going into college. It was interesting to watch when it started. I have to say if you're watching the original series the dub is terrible. It's fine for kids but tones down the source material a lot. In the sub/Japanese the kids are constantly dealing with way more interesting problems(death/illness/being eaten alive/actual evil as opposed to cartoon evil) and their characters are more developed as time goes on.

I'll check those out those two you mentioned.

Yeah, I started Magus' over the weekend and I've got to say that it's very good I'm only a few episodes from being up to date with it at this point. I was skeptical after watching the first episode but I'm glad I continued.

And yeah Violet is on Netflix, that's the first place I saw that one but they still post episodes weekly rather than in batches like their other content. I believe there are three episodes left before the season concludes, or at least that is the case for the dubbed version. I'll start watching when it completes.

I watched Peace maker kurogane which I really liked. Kind of an old school shonen thing mixed with historical drama.
Also just marathoned C-Control or The Money of the Soul which was really interesting to watch. Sort of a shonen combined with a philosophical discussion of wealth.
I'm rewatching Beck, Kids on the Slope, and You Lie in April.
My Hero Academia starts up again on April 4th or 5th.

Yeah I saw the trailer for Hero Aca the other week, quite surprised that it's airing so shortly after the last season finished (or at least it seems that way to me).

I'm now up to date on Magus bride and I just started Devilman Crybaby which seems interesting enough. I'm in the process of moving house at the moment so my ability to binge watch anime might be handicapped a little though.

I've also heard rumors that there doing more Steins;Gate this year as well which i'm very excited about if that's true.

I think Evergarden just finished the season now so I think I'm going to start that tomorrow.

Crybaby is good for the same reason Akira and Ghost in the Shell are. They ask serious questions about what it is to be human, challenge assumptions about morality, and what our place in the universe is. The animation on Akira and GitS were also groundbreaking at the time. GitS was also the first time anime was really introduced to a larger audience and done at a time when America was testing out the idea of "cartoons for adult" Heavy Metal was out among other things.

Don't get me wrong, I completely appreciate that and I know for a fact that without them most of the shows I watch now wouldn't exist or at least not in the form they are now. I just mean that with so much hype surrounding both of them I was expecting a bit more from them.

The points and themes addressed in both are great even now when those ideas have been recycled many times over by more recent media. It's more the story that I was disappointed by. I can't recall my reasons for disliking Akira as it was a while ago but GitS seemed to end really abruptly as if it ended half way through the film and I didn't feel like any progress had been made developing the story.

I suppose that's the thing with expectations though. If you go into something expecting it to be great and it's only "okay" then you will persevere it as being bad.

I've been rewatching Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) lately since I've forgotten most of the plot to it. It's definitely a trip down memory lane, back when life was simple, and my biggest worry was whether or not Ed figured his problems out.

Yeah, you really have to control you expectations on things. Particularly older shows and movies.

Persona is really great. The animes aren\'t very good usually though.

I just started Gundam Build Divers which seemed like a weird thing to exist but like it.

I\'ve just finished Violet Evergarden today and I\'m pretty glad I watched it. I\'m not ashamed to admit that I shed a single many tear watching episode 10 paha. Now that the season has completed I think Death march is next on my list and then finally Overlord should be finished too. I\'ve been looking forward to these two all season. It\'s been a while since I\'ve been able to satisfy my shameful shameful SAO addiction.

And yeah I\'m really liking Persona 5, I\'m quite shocked that I had never heard about it until recently. I\'m about 35 hours in over a few weeks and I\'ve only done the first two palaces 😅 I\'m not sure how I feel about the time management aspect as I like to be able to take my time and complete everything but I will admit that it works really well for this kind of game.

I added the animes to my watch list a few weeks back but they\'re based on Persona 4 so I probably wont watch them unless I find a way to play the game and from what I understand it\'s not the easiest game to play unless you\'ve got a PS2 or a Vita, of which I have neither. It also looks like 1 & 2 are available for PS1 but not here in Europe and Persona 3 is available here but it\'s PS2 only.

I just started Evergarden and am just not impressed at all. It\'s a really overdone anime troupe and they\'re not even adding anything new, just throwing in the amputee fetish and FMA visual reference. I\'ll finish it but so far it\'s doing nothing for me.
Deathmarch is wrapping up, Overlord too. The new SAO might be interesting. I read the SAO novels before the anime came out and the author basically spend every novel apologizing for writing SAO and how he writes female characters but this new season looks like it the author might have grown a little.

However, there is hope as he immediately rejoins the world of Glory in its new Tenth server.

I've heard good things about that one, unfortunately there's not a dub for it as far as I know so I'm yet to watch it. Maybe one day.

Just finished Overlord II and I watched Death march before that. Enjoyed both of them though I thought Overlord seemed pretty odd structure and perspective wise. It was cool to see some of the other characters but I really just wanted to seem more of Ainz. Seemed odd to have 3-5 episodes dedicated solely to the lizard people especially as they don't show up at all after that with the exception of the traveler's weapon. I may end up rewatching season one as I can't really remember too much of it.

Just started watching season two of Is it wrong to pick up girls in a dungeon. It's been out for a while now but they've just added a dub for it and I'm also looking forward to watching Hero aca 3, Tokyo Ghoul:Re & Steins;gate 0

Yep, Sadly only the chinese dub is available till now I don't think they will make a eng or jap dub in this anime welp, Anyways the King's avatar Season 2/OVA just ended yesterday.

Yeah for Overlord the lizard people are a filler arc but it explains where the female lizard comes from later as she becomes important. I liked season 2 but it is super weirdly laid out. They'r trying to shove a lot in into one season. They do well for what they cover>

I have started and stopped watching Stein's Gate four times. I'm going to play the visual novel and call it good.

King's Avatar is so so so Chinese. It's striking. It's a good show but the culture is super palpable. It's been awhile since I dipped into chinese anime so it's "fresh" but god does it get old after awhile.

I got through season two of is it wrong and it was pretty good, I was worried I wasn't going to care about the characters as it focuses on different people but it was still enjoyable. It focuses on the sword princess and her party rather than Bell and shows you what's happening from her point of view through the events of season one. I'm assuming they had planned to do this from the start because the two seasons sync up really well. Either that of they had planned for both stories to be told at the same time but had to cut it.

I'm rewatching season one at the moment which is the first time I've rewatched an anime since I started getting through them last year.

Interesting, I couldn't find season 2 anywhere but everything was saying later this month. It'll be a good refresher, hopefully season 3 comes sooner.

The only good live action I've ever seen is Rurouni Kenshin. They change the story some but it is very, very good. It's success is what spawned a lot of the recent attempts.

I believe the second season is called Sword Oratoria if that helps. It's more of a spin off than an actual second season but I'm definitely looking forward to S3 all the same. I think the minotaur fight about half way through (in both seasons) is one of my favourite parts.

I also started watching Aggretsuko which is pretty amusing. I think it's a Netflix exclusive but it's about a middle aged woman who is also a red panda that works an office job that she hates and uses death metal karaoke to help her make it through the week. It's also done in the style of Hello Kitty 

Literal foundation of my childhood and my favorite manga and anime. They got canceled after season 3 because the studio stopped following the manga or listing to the writer and did a whole season of filler nonsense. The manga is the pinnacle of shonen for me. A follow up was released that tells the story from a minor character's point of view and emphasizes the viewpoint of the first major antagonist(as he is later an ally).

Tenchi Muyo, Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakasho, and Gundam Wing were really my first animes. Rurouni Kenshin is king for me. The Samurai X OVA movies that deal with the last arc of the manga and the prequel are done by a different studio than the anime, but really complete the story in terms of animation. The manga is stronger than the anime I think, but the anime is also very charming. It exists at this perfect nexus of being for shonen and shojo. It's somehow an action based historical drama mashed up with a romantic comedy.

Like I said, the live action movie is the only one I've ever seen that was actually good and it's a recent film. The 2010s release easy. Lots of practical effects rather than CGI.

In the time LG has been down I've gotten through Hero Aca S3 which is as good as ever and Tokyo Ghoul:re which has been a pleasant surprise compared to S2 and I also started watching Granblue Fantasy, which seemed pretty cool because it basically looked like a Final Fantasy anime but I got bored half way through and started watching Hero Aca instead.

I think I watched the first of the new Digimon movies as well at some point.

The new Digimon are pretty good.
I finished Darling in the Franxx and it was amazing. Record of the Grancrest War was also pretty good.
Hero Aca is fine. Overlord is supposed to start back up soon.

I remember trying to rewatch the original Digimon series a few years back and couldn't bear to watch more than a few episodes. The cringe factor was pretty high. I may take another crack at it some time but I don't think it will be any time soon. I'll definitely get round to watching the rest of the new ones though as I quite enjoyed the first one.

I've heard mixed things about Darling in the Franxx but I think I'm still going to give it a watch. I believe there's only a few episodes left on the dubbed side before the season is over so I'll probably pick it up in a few weeks.

Oddly I haven't actually pick up anything new to watch after finishing up Tokyo Ghoul, I'm taking some time to catch up on some non-anime series that I've been neglecting.

The Dub of the original Digimon did not age well. It's bad. They also re-wrote a lot of the show. The original got very dark very quick and is probably more young adult than Bandai wanted. They deal with divorced parents, death, etc. I highly recommend watching the Sub on that one if you want to get anywhere.

So Darling in the Franxx is something you can't appreciate when you're at the beginning. The series has three clear arcs with their own tone. The tone at the start of Darling in the Franxx does it a huge disservice in that so many people almost quit watching it, me included. It's got Kill La Kill level sight gags and a dense nomenclature for its world. They explain very little to start. This is fine. Just bear with it. It will get better. They sort of constantly put you on the same level of knowledge and maturity as the cast. So when they are just starting out, doe eyed kids you get sex jokes they don't understand and no information about the world. As the cast grows and learns, you learn with them and the content and focus changes. I'm still mulling it over, but I think it's one of the 10 best anime I've watched in the last 5 years. It might even be one of my favorites of all time. They hit mecha anime troupes, but manage to do something interesting with them.

I may have to try that, I'd be interested to see the differences between the two versions and it may be an excuse for me to try to get into subs.

I'm quite shocked that Overlord is back so soon though. I only watched season 2 recently but I'm not going to complain about more content.

I think Overlord 2 had a season between 2 and 3, from a subbed perspective.

I haven't had much to say over the past two weeks because I haven't really been watching anything but I just started watching Children of the Whales and I'm really enjoying it. All it took was two episodes and I was hooked. I decided to watch it because it popped up on Netflix with a little autoplay thing on the homepage and the animation and art style looked really good. It reminded me of Your Name so for that reason alone I gave it a watch.

I'm only a few episodes in so far but I'm really liking it. The world and the characters remind me a lot of Final Fantasy X and Jade Cocoon for the PS1. The story also seems somewhat similar to the start of Gurren Lagann but swap out the mechs for floating sand islands.

Yes! It's a great show. I really enjoyed it. It's definitely old school JRPG more than anything.
