She seems to have two different issues there. Sleep apnea is more or less the reverse of parasomnias (which your ex seemed to have some form of), in which the mind is active but the body is non-responsive. She should go see a sleep doctor about that if she hasn't, might be able to prescribe her some medication.
For me personally, when it occurs, it's pretty crazy, even more so because I'm delirious at the time. Most of the night sessions, I've trained myself not to fight it (even though in hindsight I know nothing will happen, when it occurs it really does feel as though I'm suffocating and about to die). The day time sessions still mess with me though, since I rarely sleep during the day, and when it occurs I can usually open my eyes, which is a huge mindfuck.

Yeah she's been going to sleep doctors since she was a kid, and the medication they give her works, but it has a bad effect on her. It makes her EXTREMELY depressed. It was worse in her early teens. Her old prescription made her depressed to the point of suicide.
I can't imagine having sleep apnea. It sounds pretty scary. o.<☜(* x *)☞FOOL ON COOL GENERATION
