Illuminati is a blanket term for numerous secrete societies over the years. Like the Freemasons its unlikely that the organization is a continual link through the years. If there are Illuminati currently then there are more than likely multiples and some may be plotting world government take over and some may be tied up in the secret societies at ivy league schools and may consist of the wealthiest members of our society. I doubt they have the power that conspiracy theorist say they do. I say this because I can tell you that corporate interests rule the world any way so people don't need a secret society to run the world the way they want to, all they need is money.
As to their goals are I know traditionally they wanted the ability to discuss science and human progress, it was with in agreement with religious belief. Pop culture says they want to have a world government that is founded in religious belief or just torture humanity or undermine religion. If there is a powerful group of them in existence then its just a name attached to a club of rich guys sitting around talking about how they can make more money. Most of them seem to be frats being stupid.

However some things are odd and are kind of hard to explain, although any form of logic can show that its not likely, even impossible, and yet there is contradicting evidence that shows that it is likely. One of the major symbols in Freemasonry and the Illuminist organizations.

As for the reach of their power, who is to say that they don't hold more power then conspiracy theorists say they have.

Why on earth would you come out? If I don't have to tell you something why would I? Particularly if it'd upset you? A group of old men helping corrupt governments and drive policies towards their benefit at your expense, that's likely to cause problems.

I explain the symbolism away because the eye exists before either group and then was used in the US all over. There are twenty different means to most symbols. Symbols are a terrible thing to use to gauge membership in any thing because they often exist prior to the organization and as soon as someone uses it as the symbol relating to an organization people just start using it.

I say they can't have that power because the type of organization you need to have an Illuminati like you're talking about is massive. You'd be looking at something the scale and size of the entire governmental apparatus of the US including federal, state, and local. Then it'd need to be set up like the UN at least in the sense there'd be a major council, a inclusive less powerful one, and then a bureaucracy larger than any the world currently knows.
That last thing is why I can't believe there is a functioning global illuminati ruling the world. You'd need so much space and people to administer a world government it'd be impossible not to be noticed. Aside from that I'm a poli. sci. major. I study the behavior of states and government. The effects of a global government would be obvious. States act based on a balance of power and their own interests. Occasionally the cooperate but things they cooperate on only further their own ambitions.

Old men that want to control the world is nothing new, if it is given at face value as a fascist governing regime or something else of the sort that is more of a cloak and dagger kind of act would be unbeknownst to us. People talk about motives as many reasons as people. And at that even a group of old men manipulating policies for their own benefit in its own right can be considered a secret society or uber-rich people working behind the scenes to control what is said and done. Who's to say thats not the true nature of the Illuminati? Maybe they are just a bunch of rich and powerful old men, maybe they are more.
