Broke with rent due tomorrow?

My rent is 925 a month, we have 598.00 in the bank, with nothing to sell, rent, lease, etc. We need money TODAY,
as our landlord will not negotiate a grace period with us. If we're late one day, they tack on an extra 50 bucks and threaten a court hearing.

We were looking into payday loans, which turned up nothing except potential scams.
PayDay isn't til tuesday and even then we won't have enough. We're in this predicament because of the car needing a 2500 transmission overhaul.

Any advice?

If you put down a security deposit, ask to use some of it to make up for what is missing this month. I've done that before. It sucks because you won't have that money for when you leave that place, but it will keep the roof over your head.

There should be no problem in doing that, most landlord's will use a security deposit in place of actual rent at least one time. And no problem. Its my job to help people.

Well if you don't have a lot of money with the deposit, supplement it with the money that you have saved, it should give some padding until the next time you get paid.

No. It just means when you move out, if anything is fucked up and they have to replace it, you have to pay out of your own money instead of using the deposit. The deposit is there to shield you from extra costs.

I thought that too, but there is only so much you can spackle. I still lost $825 out of my security deposit, I still got $500 back, but thats still a lot.

If you want to save money a little better just do what I did, I started shopping for food at my local Dollar store, and my grocery costs went from $500 monthly to $150 monthly. So its a good way to keep money handy. Also, if you have the space, another room-mate to split the rent will lessen the blow a little more. I know a lot of good ways to save cash. I went from having only $1000 in the bank to $6000 in the bank in a month.

Well its easy to save money, but its the temptation of know that you have it. I used to be the same way. A good way to save up money is to just take maybe 30% of each of your paychecks and putting into a savings account. You can open a high yield savings account and make your money work for you. Another good way is to pay all of your bills when you first get paid, or even pay a months rent in advance so you can work the whole next month on saving money.

Thats the problem. If you can identify what the problems are, then you can prepare for them. For instance I have a budget set up so I can see what I have to spend on what. Thats all you need. Just set the right parameters.

Get a white board or some sort of calender and write down all your expenses/bills listed by the date they are due like:
(This is just random numbers to show what I mean.)
1st - Rent due - 500
3rd - Tmoble - 75
5th - Car insurance - 100
13th - Utilities - 150
17th - Car payment -575
20th - Credit card payment - 50
Variables:
Gas - 100 (The average amount you spend on gas)
Food - 150 (The average amount you spend on food)

ect.

From that point figure out the average time you both get payed normally then calculate how much you have until the next pay check.

So let's say you get payed on the 1st and again on the 15th and your average pay check is $1250. You'd take your expected finances add them up and subtract them by your income.
$1250 - $825 = 425

425 Dollars is what you would have left over until your next pay check after all your "stable" bills are payed. Leave $250 of that aside for your monthly gas and food expenses.
With the $175 you have left over put at least 100$ in savings. (If not more.)
That leaves you $75 to dick around with until your next pay check.


So now your pay check is here again and let's say this pay check is $1250. You have your car payment due on the 17th and credit card payment due on the 20th.
So $1250 - $625 = $625 With that 625$ you have left over I'd at least put half into your savings. That leaves you with $312.50 to mess around with.
A good tip for any bills that aren't stable such as gas and food is to take what ever is it normally is and add a little to that. That way in case you need more gas or food in a month you have that in the budget. If you don't need that extra money there is no harm in it sitting in your bank account.

Anyways with the example your total into savings would be.
100 + 312.50 =
$412.50 per month.
Which is $4,950 per year.

Thank you clover, the white board is a good idea, and we have a whole excel worksheet that calculates everything, I guess we just have to get into the routine of things.

As for the security deposit, apparently, isn't allowed to be taken from at our complex, but they put us on a payment plan, to pay half now and pay the rest the 27th. Hurrah.
