This is Thomas's idea, I'm just extending on it.
The Junkyard. Most of our members post there right? Some of our great members haven't even gotten to 50 posts yet, but why? Because the Junkyard disables post count. The Junkyard is a place to talk about anything you want, spam and whatnot, but that should change. Why? Because we pretty much have legitimate discussion in the Junkyard anyways.
For example, Introvert. He has maybe 35 posts at this point. He has contributed a lot not only in the Visualization section, but posted his work in the Junkyard. He's still at 35 and just now had signature images enabled for him.
Thomas, you've posted a lot yourself in the Junkyard. We've discussed some tech, some real life issues, and community-related issues. Your post count is still about 250. You're the Member of the Month.
These are just a couple examples of people that should have more post count. But why am I bitching about post count? Because for some odd reason, this community's non-staff ranking depends solely on post count as opposed to applications. None of this would be necessary if the Underground rankings needed applications. Unfortunately, it's automatic, so for those who deserve a higher rank they should at least get it. Questions? Comments? Thoughts against this?

Moar Post Count
- 03 Aug. 2010 03:55pm #2
Yes yes and YES! This is one thing that never made much sense to me. The junk yard is our most popular forum, so it only makes sense that we should have post count enabled. I also think we should have post count everywhere except the introduction and forum games sections. Those are the only sections where no real discussion happens.

!
Also, if this carries through, we'd need to readjust the rules in the Junkyard and either increase the required post count for UG even more and/or add applications.

Wouldn't this make everyone spam the junkyard to get to UG?
This would make everyone spam and not get told anything about it cause its the junkyard.
Also i wouldn't like if they fucked up the junkyard ill be pissed.

That's why I said we should readjust the JY a bit That's also why I said we should add applications
ie. No shit spamming for post count
Saying "ok" and "cool" would be alright as long as it's legit. Like if someone said "I fucking love skippy", saying "cool" would be some ******ry response = warning.
- 03 Aug. 2010 04:04pm #6
Honestly, it's post count. It should go up when you make a post. If not than there is no point in having it. And if the jy stays just like it is than it will be fine. All the spam is done in the forum games section. And if they start spamming like crazy just to get to UG than it will be obvious and they will get all their posts deleted; just as if they where to spam any other section.

Personally I think we've just gone crazy with post count. Everything is pretty much judged off of it. People get banned because of it. It's kind of horrible. I think we should just throw all that spam stuff aside and be a real forum (post = post count + 1). Of course this would have to call for UG applications WHICH IF CARRIES THROUGH I WILL GLADLY MODERATE THEM. Just like Omega used to do :'(

I'm saying post count SHOULDN'T matter. Post count is not a very good substitute for actual activity.
- 03 Aug. 2010 04:13pm #12
That's Lg's flaw. Everybody is having a minimalistic attitude and if something can possible be abused than everybody does not want it. And application forum for graphics team, underground, programming team etc is needed. People need to earn these groups, not just post to get it. That will in turn lead to better contest in the underground sections witch also leads to more users.

yeah i agree with this, and dont hate for me being newb.. xD , but true post count doesnt really prove much, it just shows your on a crap load annnd your posting everywhere on forums. alot of what happens does pretty much mess up the name of this being called a forum.
ex. posts deleted, but of course if its legit spam then gtfoooo

I actually really like this idea, because even myself being mildly active I still don't have that many posts and I don't mind.
I like the idea of applying for UG anything, that way all the leechers have less of a chance of getting in.
Plus I really think UG should be earned and not so automatic it makes it more prestigious, which gives users a reason to actually work towards it.
It also might help cut down on useless spam in all the wrong areas if the JY had a post count.
All hail kitty pig.

The automated promotion is kind of the reason UG bronze isn't as good as it used to be. In 1.0 we had Regular Member, UG Member, and ViP Member. In this sense, UG in 1.0 would be equal to UG Silver in 2.0 which has some pretty good stuff in it. This was because of the application system that was in place that Omega moderated. ViP would be equal to the non-existent UG Gold which by seeing Silver, would have some kickbutt shit in it. There were prerequisites involving posts and rep however.
E: I strongly support this suggestion, so I'm gonna put up a poll for this to see who agrees

Well nonetheless they're good stuff. I can't even download 90% of the shit in UGS because Arti uploads them in attachments and the attachment system doesn't work ._.
But if all that shit did work, that would be as good as UG in 1.0, and the public section in 1.0 as good as bronze here.
- 04 Aug. 2010 05:17pm #21
i agree JY posts should count, probably not retroactively though, and not until a new system like you mentioned is put in place for UG, or else it would only take 50 minutes or so to have your 50 viable posts. post count should only be about activity, not prestige and trustworthiness.

It's a neat idea. I never looked at it from that perspective. I really like the application idea. Fill out an application to get into UG Bronze, Silver, Gold, Staff status, etc.

The multiple underground can stay as is... it's not taking up space or anything.

I think if everybody had access to that one underground, where would the super 1337 stuff go? Granted we don't have any in the UG anyway, but just for the sake of argument.
I like the multi-level undergrounds. If this idea gets passed Temptii, and there is an application to fill out for UG, then I think we should either
a. have an active mod around to pass the applications and give people access
b. overall UG-status people's opinions. We basically have people who are already in the UG vote to decide whether or not the applicant is capable or not.☜(* x *)☞FOOL ON COOL GENERATION

They had a VIP section. The problem with voting for each applicant is that it's completely impractical. How would we get all the members in UG to vote? Voting for every single applicant is also tedious ._.
No moderators to accept applications, or at least not primarily. In LG 1.0 there was a man named Omega whom I've been referring to a lot lately. He had the staff position of Application Moderator which of course means, he accepted/denied all applications. That's a better idea because moderators should have other work to be doing...

I think that enabling post count in the JY is pointless. All it will do is make spam increase and people will have ridiculously high post counts for not really contributing. and a lot of people like it the way it is. Applications are in discussion as are a few other things that were brought up that have a lot of merit.
JY is for spam and stupid posts. not post countVoted Hottest Male Member

>Implying postcount is meaningful.
It just shows how many times you have posted, not saying how respected you are, how trusted you are or anything. LG has so many flaws, and this is a huge one. EVERY other forum I go to, which is quite a few. Have a "spam forum" with postcount enabled. Post count != Penis size.
Just enable it, and add applications. Save us all some hell.Shh, I'm watching My little pony.

This is exactly my point. If new users see that most of the members only have around 400 posts then that give off the illusion that nothing good happens here. Even with that aside, if you make a post than your post count should go up. The problem here is that people are treating it as a rep system.

Why is it taking so long for a Admin to post here?
It has 12 yes's and 0 no's most members agree and isn't this what members want?

Legit bump for Torian (is that okay?).
- 19 Aug. 2010 04:19am #37
I wonder how many posts I'd have if the JY counted.
I don't really care about post count, so it's a no from me seeing as it would probably change the activities in the Junkyard.
But as long as it doesn't turn into General Discussion 2 I'm fine with it.

The only reason I see the junkyard changing is because in the first 5 minutes people think that post count scaled rankings would be in place and post a bunch of shit in the junkyard then Google posts in the thread and says "You need to apply for UG" and they're like "fuck me". And it's always been General Discussion 2, but in the General Discussion you can see people actually trying.
- 19 Aug. 2010 12:06pm #39
I'm against it, unless we get UG apps going.
I'd rather not have to contribute in junkyard posts.
