Aside from the new mechanics and stuff, the Pokemon look like they're at an all time worst to me.
They look like pure cartoons.

Well you know, since they are cartoons it's sort of appropriate they look that way.
Also while I also prefer the gen one aesthetic as opposed to the direction they have gone, they went this direction a long time ago and made it their own. Which considering the plethora of monster taming games and cliches associated with them, I am impressed with pokemon and have to give them the fact that you can see a pokemon and know it's a pokemon. Gamefreak more or less reinvents their universe every game. Most monster titles add a few new monsters or a mechanic and just go on with their games forever. Pokemon basically invents a new world every game, they all exist in the same continuum ad time line and they do little cross pollination to emphasize that but otherwise: new monsters, new land, new characters, new story(though very similar), & new mechanics. The only other games series that does that that I can think of right off the bat is Final Fantasy.
I was in the same boat as you until I sat down and gave Black 2 and the "new"pokemon a real shot. Once I did I found that what I had loved about the original pokemon had been refined and improved upon. Are there some stupid crap pokemon? Yeah, but there were some in every gen. Plus the cartoon aesthetic is really not something they do with every pokemon. There are plenty that carry on with that gen one aesthetic.
