I don't think that's applicable when his son is 18. He is an adult. Laws aren't that bound by red tape. That's like saying if you use public WiFi to break the law, then the McDonald's you were at is the one who will get sued, even if there is evidence that you specifically are the one who did it.
Now if the kid is a huge lying turd, used his parent's computer, and feigns ignorance, then the parent could be the one facing repercussions. If he was over 18, used his own computer, or admits to it, he'll be the one in trouble.
But I assume they more than likely just received a cease and desist instead of an actual lawsuit? Tell them to stop pirating and apologize.
