Im looking for a good Instant Messaging service, I don't really like skype but I may download it if there is a good enough reason too.

Most people use Skype these days. Hotmail is being phased out and has been merged with the Skype network.
The only chat client that I know of that can use Skype Toolkit properly is Trillian. IMO.im used to, but it recently broke. Other chat services like Pidgin have Skype plugins but they require Skype to be running in the background.
