I only exercise at home. I ride my bike 7+ miles a day, even in the snow, and I also run and stuff. No weight lifting, but I make up for it in BMX (Lots of having to try to lift up the entire bike and your bodyweight, it actually gives you muscles)

Being toned comes with strength. Strength training is going beyond strength to sport-level strength. If you aren't an athlete, the only strength you would have any reason to desire would be self-defense-level, which is more skill than pure muscle. If that's the case, you should take a class on it. Beyond that, toning will give you all the strength you would need for any daily task, and even enough for a decent level of self-defense.
