Apparently, a lot.

Not really.
Basically just explore until you have enough money for a net.
(You could even walk around the Wasteland first and hope to find large amounts of bp. But don't fight anything)
Or play bones until you win the jack pot.
Once you have a net go to the Wasteland and walk around until you find a higher level pet.
You choose net before the battle.
Use net. If you don't catch it move onto the next thing until you do.
That should give you a level 17 pet or so to walk around with.
Then in the Wasteland things randomly drop high amounts of bp.
Nothing forcibly attacks you either.
Got 396k in the last few days.

Popping Berries which restore energy +8 engery are like 70 - 80bp each.
When you hit 1mill bp you can go to the bp store and buy a stone to make a custom pet.
Which saves you from having to shell out real money.
There are also freebies like 10 free foods ect.

It's a slow start but once you're on track super easy.
I also suggest making a thread to introduce yourself.
People will give you stuff.

More tips:
Oh and don't buy anything from traveling merchants they almost always have shitty stuff.
Invest in merchants if you have extra BP. When you do you have a chance of them returning 10k or more to you.
Sometimes they return nothing how ever. On average I get about 1.5k to 500bp back.
If you run into a treasure chest but don't have a key always pick the lock. Most of the time you won't get anything however if you're lucky you will.
Oh and leveling up areas through pets is tied to that pet only. So I don't suggest doing quests to up the area level until you have a pet you really like or a decent pet from the wasteland.
