Yes and no. The human body can go for an extended period of time without food. I went for 12 days without food. I do not recommend it for longer than three or four days. After that, the long-term effects on your body are not worth it, since your body can start eating it's own muscles for energy. It's been almost a year since my extended fast, and my body has still not fully recovered from the loss of muscle.

Muscle loss is only going to happen if you don't do some kind of muscle building exercise with it. So his point is moot. Protein shakes make up for muscle loss and the nutrient loss that starts the use of muscle for energy, and it doesn't infringe on the no solid diet. Every person is different all results are different.
