It's really as simple as forcing yourself to converse. Think of topics and start talking about them to whoever you're either spending time with, in a conversation with, etc.
Shy generically stems as an attribute from people who don't take the initiative to talk to others. Like anything else, keeping conversation going is something that is attained through practice. The more you try to talk, the more practice you get. Well-versed knowledge in all things that affect you also aid in keeping conversation going, general knowledge of arts, sciences, world events, or even specific categories which may link you to a person, such as common hobbies like woodworking or games.
The more you have to talk about, the more open you are to talking to people without feeling awkward.

Yeah i dislike awkward silence in particular. I've used that as a reason to force myself to keep to conversation rolling, which actually does wonders for your personality, your socialability, and knowledge of over-all area subjects. The way I see it, the more life experiences or knowledge you acquire, the more relateable any subject you can possibly fathom becomes. Many times conversation can go to things as simple as your own view points on life or global events, which you literally just pull out of your ass after thinking about it for less than a second. Communicating them though also helps you develope in words what your own personality/characteristics are , as well as keeping the ball rolling.
