I have a copy of a Java college book (and a few other programming txt books, but I wont get into that) and I was wondering if its worth learning at this day in age. What benefits can I get out of learning java?

Java, by design is object oriented. If you actually read through an entire college textbook and understood/retained most of it, you'll come out not only knowing about Java, but object oriented programming (which in turn will allow you to pick up other OO languages easily).
Is it worth it? Absolutely. Java is still one of the most popular (if not the most popular) languages being used today. OO is continuing to gain momentum through more and more areas of computer science, so it helps to at least have a basic understanding.
