Why the fuck wouldn't it be legal?
As long as it's in your state / province, it should be good to go seeing as it's (usually) one school district per state / province.Apply for BCK Hacking Crew! Read this link for more info.

Yes it's possible and legal. However you might have to get out of boundary acceptance from the school in another city.
All hail kitty pig.

But why do you want to go through all that trouble?

Unless you own a house or rent an apartment in that city than no. Every year when you register you are required to provide an electric bill for that school district, and the address on the bill must match the address on your parent/guardian's license (if you're <1. Or at leas that's how it is here in the states. Besides, I went through all that trouble and it isn't worth it. You're going to be late almost every day, and if you get sick you'll have to wait forever to go home.

Some cities like NYC want you to go to specific public schools depending on your location. Other places, like Vermont, will send your kids over to the next state (I'm not even kidding) due to the way zoning works. You can pretty much go to school wherever you want to, but you might have to pay a tuition of some sort for not living in a certain area.

Wierd, they recently made a big discussion about some family living closer to one school in another county, but they were barred from going to it, so they had to go to the other school which was farther away but in their county.
