The tragic death of a trainer at Sea World last week revived a number of long simmering questions. While we still grapple with "how did this happen?" the central question for many revolves around the role of large mammals -- like Tilikum the killer whale -- in zoos and aquariums: Should they be there or not?
It can be there if we want it to be. An for the most part we do. The people that interact with the animals know the risks, they sign wavers and contracts. The trainers are trained to interact with the animals and they noticed that the whale was pissed off before the show, and decided to ignore that fact and thus someone paid the price. Not the whale's fault its the trainer's.
I don't think they should be caged. We can't truly control them. That whale didn't go berserk, it went Whale.
