Remote Activated Webcam, and scandal!
Some High School gave kids MacBooks with webcams in them, to study and dick around on.

But, the webcams were connected to a remote-activation program, discovered when a child was confronted for improper behavior in his room, with a picture taken from the webcam as evidence.

That's pretty sad. Why did they feel the need to do this?

This is what idiocy is causing. Don't give a kid a car if they don't know how to drive. Don't blame technology when they crash it.
lern2privacy&security or GTFO 'cause you deserved it.

They did it so that if one of the students reported their laptop got stolen they could find out who stole it. But instead they where using it to spy on the students. And I want to know who decided to confront the student about what he was doing in his own house. This pisses me off on so many levels.

I know why the did it, I meant why did they spy on the student. That's just wrong.

They probably did it to make sure that the students where "doing their work." But they ended up catching the kid smoking pot, masturbating or something of the sort.

But wouldn't you think it'd be against the company who provided the service's TOS or something to just bogusly activate it without a theft.

Well the "improper behavior" on the student's part was him taking pills.

Actually they were Mike and Ikes.

@GAMEchief: It's not the student's fault for his "idiocy". The average high schooler knows nothing about computer security, let alone the fact that the school could access the webcams. I'm sure you or I could disable it, but the average kid couldn't. They shouldn't have to worry about it, though.

I swear to God I heard about something like this a while ago, but with cell phone cameras.
