I feel there might have been some other steps to take before "bash with hammer". Though they would not have been as satisfying unless you went with " slice off top half of the jar with katana/light saber".
I remember last year my roomates girl would bash the side of top on the counter all around, and it somehow made it easier.

Last time I tried opening a container (bottle) with my counter, it just chipped the counter. 
I normally just opt for running it under hot water while hoping for the metal top to expand. Hasn't failed me yet.
