Yeah it was. Except they pretended it was just a comedy for like 3/4th of the series. That's messed up man.
Also Grave of the Fireflies, if you ever need to make sure you're alive just watch it and then be sad. Be so very sad.

Also you think this anime is bad? Clannad by the same company oh my god.
The first season is all kawaiii desu desu. The second season will rip your heart out and toss it on the ground.
I did not take Ethan seriously when he told me about it. Watch the first season all like. "This is too moe to be really sad...I mean it has it's moments..."
Then watched the second season... Every time I hear the dango song I want to go Q _ Q
I don't think I've ever cried so much to an anime, except at the end of AnoHana (Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai) but clannad after story(the second season of clannad) beats it because it made me baw multiple times through out the series.
Oh and if you like angel beats you'll probably like clannad too.

Netflix seems to have season two but not season one. Should I just watch that?

No. D: I think it's probably best to watch the first season or you'll be extremely lost.
My suggestion is to either torrent the first season or find a place that streams anime.
