I like Stack Overflow, it's extremely helpful when you have questions.

Currently installing BackTrack 5 on a virtual machine because I've yet to hook up a dedicated machine for it. I might just go buy a junky laptop and make that the dedicated machine, because I already have too many desktops under and on my desk.

I'd rather just boot BT from a USB stick or something. VM is alright, but I'll probably never create a dedicated machine for it. It isn't good at all for a primary OS. It's more of a supplemental thing.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but if I just ran a debain machine or something, I would probably just end up installing all of the tools that Backtrack already has, so I figured I should just run backtrack. The one thing I don't like is it's GUI though, it's the fairly old Ubuntu GUI instead of the nicer newer one.

Haha, it's actually a UI. GUIs are the sub-components of the main user interface. Just pointing that out.

But yeah, I don't have any problem with doing that. Whatever works for you.

it would be a complete waste if you were to install it onto a laptop as your primary OS even if it were a junker. linux is linux.

Well, BackTrack comes with some helpful penetration testing tools, but a lot I don't need. I mostly only need the "Networking" toolset, and I figured it would be easier to run BT then having to install a bunch of tools on Debain. I can't use my normal Windows 7 because the tools I need are Linux/UNIX only. It was either BT, Debain, or RedHat.

lol well if you MUST use it at least run it in a vm or as unintelligible said off a usb. and you can find and use most of the "hacking" tools on bt on any distro.

Yeah, that's a good point.

Tools I need the most at the moment:

nmap
hping2
firewalk
scanrand

I found them all online, but surprise surprise, BT only has nmap lol.

I'm running Nmap/Zenmap on Windows right now.



Any tool you can find on BT you can also find on any other distro and even sometimes platform. Either find a binary or compile from source.

And I am too, I'm scanning a /22 range of IPs right now haha.

Hmm... I might just run debain, the only reason I was running BT is lazy-ness, I now realize. I just was too lazy to install tools myself.

I'm going to go download the debain ISO now... haha

Debian is the name of the OS.

And it's Windows with an Ubuntu theme.
