Ubuntu

Thanks Thomas I installed it after a 1 hour sleep.
So it runs perfectly but i just wanna know what i can do on it XDD
like what languages can i run on it and what is like the must have on linux ?
BTW i'm duel booting < 3

You could have just used Wubi without all the hassle. Also, if you didn't install 10.4 then just get out. The Unity desktop interface is very OS X-like and bloated. The version I referenced allows you to opt between standard GNOME and Unity. It's what I generally use when I use Ubuntu.

Edit:

• Wine - If you want to run native Windows binaries (or software if you will), this is an essential tool.
  
• Shutter - A good Linux surrogate to Gyazo.
  
• Pidgin - An excellent cross-platform IM/chat client. If you want to use MSN or a related IM service, I strongly advise this.
  

All of which could be installed via apt-get or the Ubuntu software center. Further, no need trry about installing things like Python--it's included in Ubuntu distributions by default. Just type python in the terminal and see the result. I believe the utmost recent version is currently Python 2.7.x.

I installed 10.10 , suggested by Thomas.
And I tried downloading skype but like a dweeb I downloaded the 10.04 version ;P

I see that i'm having trouble with downloding apps, is it like cause it's the version 10.04 that is more known or am i doing it wrong ?

Lol. Well my second internet connection is bitching out on me, and i don't have permission to connect to the first one
So i only have 50 kb/s stupid public connection available. So it's kinda useless for now.
I've had this PC since 2006, it's like my first pc and i'm so happy cause it runs like new : D
But I don't have internet

Check out the ubuntu software store. You'll have to add the Skype source to install it.

I got wine but how do I install it ? I downloaded it cause it wasn't available or something. And it's so confusing . . . I want to be able to run a vpn with wine without havinginternet on pc to install wine. I'll put it on an external HDD. possible right ?

Yes. Provided that you've already downloaded the offline installation files.

Go to terminal. Type sudo apt-get install wine. That'll get and install wine. Once it's installed any .exe files will be opened in wine.

To access the apt-get repository you need internet access. If he means he wants to install Wine without an internet connection, he'll have to download and install the packages manually.

Using that command from the terminal would handle the download and installation process for you.

Yea, here's a quick tip in Linux. Always try to apt-get before you download. If it's popular Ubuntu will usually have the package in their source.

the thing is i dont have internet on it so i have wine downloaded.
and i typed in sudo apt-get install wine didnt work so i changed the wine to it's real name and still didnt work.

Follow the manual installation guidelines provided with the download. (If you don't have it you're going to have to go to the homepage for reference, in which case you're going to need internet connection. And in turn, in that case you might as well use apt get.)

ok so i put it in home folder and ran terminal
these are the commands

cd wine

cd tools

./wineisntall

answered a question with yes

then it said permission denied for ./configure

what now ? i cant install it without ./configure permission :/

Authenticate yourself. You could do this by entering sudo -s in the terminal which gives you superuser/root privileges.

You know, you don't have to force yourself to use Linux. You always have the option to go back to Windows. Some people just prefer that.

Just got it 2 nights ago
And I am getting kinda used of it.
I also tried chmod 77 but it still won't give me permission and says that installing wine as root user is not suggested so it just stops the process.
I need wine so I can Install hotspot shield so I can connect to the internet.
In fact, since i'm the one who has to pay internet at my place, i didn't pay for this month, and i found a way to get internet for free, which is to use a vpn, works perfectly but i need to install the vpn on ubuntu first. So . . . I'm sucking at this right now.

You shouldn't be messing with the permissions of system files. I'm willing to bet you haven't configured your root password yet, so if something goes wrong and you lose sudo access, it's going to a be a pain to fix.

I think you're confused. You'll often need sudo to install applications (you'll need it to do a lot - it'll be one of the commands you use most). What isn't recommended by Ubuntu is installing as your root user. Which is basically another way of saying logging in to the user root. The main reason is because it can often go terribly, terribly wrong for new users.

The following is fine:

sudo apt-get install wine

Lol i do have the pass for root.
that command is to make it install from the internet, and to get internet i need wine first, and i only have wine source.
I tried installing it from source, and didn't work either. So it's all bothering me. Unless i find an other VPN in ubuntu that i can download on windows and unpack in linux.

Using a VPN through Wine on Ubuntu just so you can connect to the internet? That sounds terrible. You'd be better off sticking with windows.

Can you not configure VPN connections through System -> Preferences -> Network connections?

As for Wine not installing, it can be multiple reasons:

1. You herp derped the installation. It should just be:

./configure

sudo make

sudo make install

2. You don't have all of the dependencies (most likely reason). You alsn't be able to get them without internet access.

I downloaded them and ran this code line :
cd ~
sudo dpkg -i cabextract*.deb gettext*.deb libmpg123-0*.deb libopenal1*.deb wine1.3*.deb

and it still stops at wine :/
all the others do install.

Also, can you give me full server info for VPN ? All i know is to run the VPN without putting in any info :/

OH lord.

Alright, you need network drivers, not a VPN. Boot into windows and download the correct drivers your for system (ubuntu/debian/linux).

There is no way Alex would know the server info for whatever VPN you've been using. That's basically along the lines of asking him what your password to your wifi network is.

Also, if you configure a VPN through wine it isn't going to do anything unix side. Anything you do in wine is sandboxed.

Keep in there, it jarring at first. But after a while you get the hang of it.

On installation with wubi i didn't have much space to give it so i didn't give it much, and i already finished the allocated space, but i would like to give it more space since i freed some space on my windows. How can I allocate more space to my linux ? Thanks

I'm not sure if you can. You're going to have to try to resize the partitions.

Y eah i had to uninstall it and redo it.
I found tutorials and all to do it but i didn't wanna mess up my windows partition so i prefer re-installing since I didn't have anything important on it.Nothing at all.
