All you need to do is update your iDevice to iOS 5.X.X and that is all ,It is called iMessage so you can actually text for free other iDevices !

You don't text that way. Its an instant messaging system. You use the Email u used to message people.

Or you just log into yahoo messenger or msn messenger, add a cellphone to a friends contact details, right click on them and click "Send SMS message"
