Ask a Schizophrenic kid anything.
Just a little background story.

I was diagnosed at age 12. The shit was scary to be honest. I would hear voices, see people that weren't there and well all around terrifying.

I remember when I was 6 I believed parents were aliens and we were all being held captive so they could raise us and eat us.

I remember after watching men in black I tried putting every bug on my neck so I could have 2 heads and maybe not get eaten.

My basement was a place where all the monsters and serial killers lived. If I ever stepped foot on the floor I would be hacked and slashed to pieces.

Everyone thinks imaginary friends are fake, until I was 8 I had an imaginary friend also named Abraham. When I was 9 he "died" in therapy.

Anyways, those are just a few things I can remember. It was scary growing up, but go ahead and ask me anything related on this topic and I'll answer it to the best of my knowledge. It's a very unknown subject to alot of people so you may as well ask while you can.

Also note I'm medicated and stable now. Some things I still don't understand but I'll still try to explain if you ask.

You're not Schizophrenic. If by the off chance you are, it's a very very mild form that is absolutely nothing to be concerned about. Besides, as I remember, you called the basement your "sanctuary" on more than one occasion. So, if the basement was where the killers and monsters where, it wouldn't be a "shelter from danger or hardship"

Damn..
Thats sad..
For realz or for fake?
#4
Did you have any real friends when you were little?

I never even heard about this....

How can you get diagnosed with this?

These cases were all before I was 12. When I became medicated all this vanished. It is very mild, now anyways.

My basement now is my sanctuary simply because it's nicely done up. Where I used to live my basement was cold, metal pipes everywhere dark and quite scary as a child.

If I didn't explain it well enough; I moved from that house, and to a few others. Basements don't bother me anymore. It was when I was a young child, ages 12 and younger.

Actually yes I did have a few friends as a child. Not many but we were pretty close. from 6 - 8 I had no real friends though so I guess that's when abe came in.

Edit :

To be diagnosed you have to go through some testing. I can't remember exactly but I know I was seeing a psychologist for about 3 - 4 years. 8 - 12 or so.

Did you ever tell them about this?

Yes. I had to tell them everything so it would all be gone as they told me. The more I talked about it the quicker they all died off.

It felt good.

Sorry bro, but this just sounds like a case of Munchausen syndrome.

Okay, you don't really seem Schizophrenic to me, unless you're extremely high functioning.
It's unlikely you have or had anything more than an extremely active imagination. Especially because although you can show signs as a child, you don't normally show full blown signs until you're in your late teens early twenties. Copy pasted: Fortunately, schizophrenia is rare in children, affecting only about 1 in 40,000, compared to 1 in 100 in adults. The average age of onset is 18 in men and 25 in women. /end copy paste
Also did they tell you what type of Schizophrenia you have? Because that makes a load of difference.

Two of my uncles on my mom's side, and one of my aunts are Schizophrenic. My uncle benny is pretty high functioning over all. He still has a lot of paranoid thoughts and my mom has to talk to him/remind him that they're part of his delusions. Over all he's a pretty chill guy and my favorite uncle, so long as he stays on his medication. Other wise he gets violent. My other uncle Charles is so far gone to the point he really doesn't live in reality any more, same goes for my aunt Francis. :/

Edit: My families genes are so high running with it in fact it's one of the main reasons I don't want to have kids. They say it skips a generation so it's highly likely my children would have it. Since none of the kids (my cousins me ect) seem to have it.

You have no idea thomas. I can't believe you would judge even without knowing.

Sounds like it, I think not.

This is why I have been taking medication since I was 12 because I want to draw attention to myself. /Sarcasm

I was talking to Gabe and he didn't really know much about it so I decided to make a topic and try to answer questions.

I know I was a bit Vague explaining it but thomas' first post was somewhat correct.

It was a very mild case, not full blown schizophrenia. Now that I think of it, more like a manifestation that lasted a while.

I ask my mom question about it all the time, she doesn't like to talk about it. Whenever I try to bring it up it gets avoided. If I ever do see my old psychologist again I will be sure to ask him more about it.

Where you going through any major stresses as a child?

It's Inception and Shutter Island all over again!

Yeah, My parents were getting divorced. I witnessed my father beating my mother. My father doing drugs infront of me, and a bunch other stuff like the loss of family, moving around, abuse from my step mother and a few other things.

That's what I can remember. It all happened really close together to so that may have caused the manifestation.

Yea then I'm pretty sure it was stress induced psychosis, which would make a whole hell of a lot more sense.
I'm pretty sure you should probably find a new doctor. D:

oh kids with imaginary friends lets give them pills while we believe in this so called god.

That could most likely be it.

To be honest if i had a step mother and she was trying to abuse me i'll knock her out.
I don't hit girls tho but if she was hitting me to where i was getting really mad.

EDIT : If she was hitting me while i was playing gears of war oh man.....

I think parents and doctors all want an easy explanation as to why people act a certain way.
They don't want to have to deal with behavioral issues, it's so much easier to hand their parents some pills.
I mean there are some who truly need them, I just think most of the time they're over prescribed... Like antibiotics. XD

It was a mixture of psychical and mental abuse. The thing she would say most is my mother (Whom I live with now and love dearly) has disowned me and I'm homeless now.

The physical abuse is something that didn't bother me as much but the things she would try to brain wash me with was, disturbing.

To be honest as a child in an abusive situation there isn't really much you can do. Especially when you're young and don't know how to handle the situation.
Plus fighting back usually just makes the situation worse.

Hah yeah. I remember I came off the pills (as they are commonly referred to as.) and I acted the same way as I do right now. Sure there was a little bit of the placebo effect but that's it. I was off them for 5 weeks, I was introuble once and she said I'm behaving like a psycho. Put me back on "the pills"

Now that I think of it more and more maybe it was just and excuse for me being myself.

Could very well be, I personally hated being on pills they made me feel like I had no personality.
I think parents don't want to admit that their crappy parenting is also part of the problem as to why children act out.

Makes a lot of sense as to why you'd have issues. :/
Abuse can really mess with your psychological response to things.
Especially mental abuse. I hate that break you down shit just to build you back up to break you down again.

It's not that my mom was a crappy parent, she's a great parent but she may have wanted just a way out of the way I was acting.

Personally I'd consider that poor parenting.
Taking an easy way out of something that can potentially hurt your child's mental health in the long run doesn't really constitute to good parenting.
I'm not saying she's a bad parent by any means, I'm just saying in that aspect she really doesn't seem to take the time to understand why you're acting out.
#26
Yeah now that I think about it. It does seem a little bad.

To be honest I could come off these pills any time at all and nothing would happen, but if she found out she would cause a shitstorm because she believes the pills make me who I am.

Maybe you should try talking to her directly about it?

I would but she's kind of stubborn. She has the "I'm right your wrong now go" kind of attitude.

I guess I understand that kind of situation. The best thing you could probably do is try and sit down with her anyways, then try to talk like a mature adult with her.
If she doesn't want to talk don't get mad just respect her, and try again another time.

Thanks clover :)

No problemo. =P

My mother is schizo. She used to hate taking her pills because she claimed some angel would tell her to stop, and when she would stop taking them all together she would get in these crazy psychotic fits. Violent fits. Destroyed our entire house one evening. I was about.. 10? 12? I don't remember. My father had to hold her down while the cops and ambulance came to restrain her and take her away.

Shit can't even begin to tell you the things she's done and went through. There are scribbles all in the family bible of symbols and words that I have no clue what is that she did right before destroying the house.

She's been in and out of mental hospitals for years.

She's diagnosed with other things as well. Bi-polar, some other long words I have no clue what are. They upped her from pills to monthly shots. Ever since then she's just this ditsy woman. No where near the mother I remember as a child.

What were common visages when you weren't 'stable'?
Have you ever considered not taking the pills for a week and seeing what would happen?

I stopped taking my pills for about 3 weeks before, nothing happened really. Nothing that I could notice.
