A lot of schools have a better upload rate then normal considering they upload a lot of files to their own FTP Server so other teachers can access them.
Yeah. The download and upload speeds beat the shit out of my home internet connection.
Downside: using any sort of file share stuff will have them owning you with lawsuits, barring you form accessing their net, and possible confiscation of your computer.
