Joe went to the book store and the clerk asked him to join the club to get 10% off. It costs $15 to join theclub. He thought about it for a minute, and then discovered that it would cost him $8 more to buy his books if he joined the club.

8x10=80

The book is 80$ without the club.

Note the more.
That means 8$ is the ten percent off.
So we multiply it by ten to find the whole.

join club + buy book = $15 + 90% of x
just buy book = ($15 + 90% of x) - $8 = $7 + 90% of x
so 10% = $7
cost of book = $7 x 10 = $70

Y=Total cost when joining club
.9X+15 = Y

Y=X+8
.9X+15=X+8
-8 -8

.9X+7=X
-.9X -.9X

7=.1X
Multiply the whole thing by ten and you get

70=X

His books cost him 70 dollars without the club.

why would you buy a book that costs as much as a game....is it a nice pop up?

College textbooks can cost double that.
