Discontinuing PS2?
I was picking up some classic PS2 games at GameStop today, and the sales associate there told me that they're discontinuing PS2 and that Madden will be the last game released for the console. If this is legit, I'm truly disgusted. It's one of my favorite consoles and these games are basically my childhood.

Thoughts?
Comments?
Inside Scoops?

I haven't been able to find any information about this online.

Well Ps2 is very old and the new games that come out have very good graphics so i don't think the ps2 can handle that or sony is just paying attention to ps3 or a later console.

My thoughts.

They're probably in the makes of the PS4 in development. I personally don't think ps2 games are going to be discontinued game cubes are still sold and it's older then the PS2.

That's what I figure. It'd be a loss on them financially if they were to discontinue the console.

finally, the ps2 was around when the nintendo 64 was still making games.
i dont care much for the ps2, never really liked it anyways.

New gaming systems are great, but that doesn't mean you should destroy the past, that's what got them to this point in the first place.
There's still games on N64 and ps2/1 that won't ever be replaced. They shouldn't be abandoned just because the newest thing is out.

Nintendo 64 doesn't sell games anymore and soon some of the older consoles won't either

It's still epic though. :P

Everything eventually reaches it's shelf life. PS3 will, 360 will. It just depends on the shelf life. PS3 for instance has a 10 year life span. So with in the the next 5 or 6 years the next PS initiative should be out.

Ps4 and xbox 720

Actually I don't believe the PS4 is going to be coming out anytime soon unless they decide to announce something at E3.
Considering Sony said they wanted to make a console that lasts a decade. Plus I think they're busy with the NGP that's coming out near the end of this year.
It's actually more likely because of the amount of people crossing over to the ps3. Same thing happened mid life cycle of the PS2 with PS1 games.
There is just no profit in making them anymore.

hmmm....
Profit is not really an issue. If they keep making stuff for PS2 it won't be to make money, but to make people stick to the console, and when the time comes to get a new one, go with what the know and are used to...

There is currently no chatter of next gen consoles and due to the hit Sony took on the PS3 and the fact the Wii and 360 are still selling strong most people in the industry do not believe we'll see a new system till 2015 or later, I've heard some say 2020 even.

The PS2 is rather sophisticated. When i came out people were freaking out because it has the ability to "launch a nuclear warhead". It was standing as competition to the 360 early on and was easily a match for the Xbox. Halo3 graphics are within the PS2's abilities.
I don't see the point to it being discontinued but considering Sony isn't making PS3 backwards compatible any more so I can see how they might be trying to phase it out. I was sad to have see the PS1 go. We kept that around till three years ago.
The lose of retro gaming market is largely disappointing to me. Still if they phase it out, they'll fire sale the current inventory so...

Yeah, that's what I'm waiting for if they do try to phase it out. Already classic games from my childhood are listed at 3-5 bucks a piece.

If you do some research you'll learn when stuff is coming out.

NO WAY!!! that sucks because the ps2 really had great games.. and the PS3 cannot play them.. so why the heck would they discontinued the ps2!!! :( They shouldn't!!! it would suck sooo much if they really do discountinue it! );

You can download any PS2 game online and emulate it with network play~ I have been doing this for the last 3 years, So, I dont see a need for the console anymore.

This isn't fair! What about all the people who can't afford a ps3? D: Like me!

Yes it will, Shell out about 20-40$ to get a Ps3 controller, And use a program called MotionJoy

Pick "Playstation 2" for the type of controller you want your controller to emulate.
Just make sure your pc is fast enough to run the PS2 emulator before you go and buy a controller.

Oh no, I meant the screen size. I've always played ps2 games on a tv. That's the only difference I meant. ^^
