we started some Typography today. This is my first attempt at a basic piece. Any opinions or suggestions would be appreciated.

Typography is usually at best when all text is horizontally oriented. Also, the way you have it only emphasizes basic outlines (it is a basic piece as you said anyways) but should also shade things in. Since you're a beginner, I'd focus on my first suggestion.

Create a large block of text expanding over the whole focal point. It doesn't need to be in the black area unless you play to put anything that isn't #000000 there. Make sure the text is white btw. Always remember that blending options are your friend. Just place the text layer over the image layer, and apply a blending option to the text. In this case, I think I used Hard Light or Linear Light because it was a dark image, but on most images Overlay, Soft Light, Color Dodge, and Linear Dodge are the best. I also duplicated the image and smudged a little to add more text in.
