I was curious to know what LG's opinions are about the concepts of social service. Do you like to help the community out, or just keep to yourself? Do you participate in fundraisers and other such events to help out the less fortunate?
IMHO it's something that has to come from the heart. Sure you can participate and help out, but it doesn't feel the same unless you're the one wanting to try and make a difference. I work in a government hospital, and thus I get to help out the poorest of the poor, who cannot afford private medical care. Sometimes they can't even pay the nominal fee required for certain investigations, and I've helped them by paying for it out of my own pocket. What can sour in my stomach is better off going to help the people who actually need it. It's probably because our whole family was born altruistic, but I digress. It might not pay as much as a position in a private hospital overall, but I still get enough money for a decent living.

For all the stuff that happens around here, LG itself is always remarkably unchanged. Thanks to the folks who still remembered I was once here and welcomed me back despite me being retarded.

Psychologicly human beings do nothing to solely benefit others. Even if you decide to randomly go and pick up garbage or help build a homeleess shelter you are still benefitting yourself with the good feeling inside from doing so, or for the benefit of others seeing you and getting a good reputation.
So social services are as their name is; social.

I think as long as you freely choose to do the actions, regardless of motivation then helping others is more than acceptable. However when you are forced to help others I find that unacceptable. You bear no responsibility other than to take care of yourself. You should never be forced to ensure the well being of others unless you choose to do so.
While I'm not often one to quote Jesus but "You will always have the poor." The same can be said of the sick and other groups in need. If you want to help them, do it. You are free to pursue what you will.
Now if you're doing things for other because of society you're an idiot in my opinion. If you're doing these things so that you feel good then you're not an idiot, you're honest and I can respect that.

Everyone is forced to help someone else at some point in their life i.e when you are in school, ect, and have to help group members finish a project. Human beings are social creatures and even people who claim to like being alone will in some way find a way to interact with people without having to be seen as themselves. Social service is a wonderful way to make yourself and the world a little bit better, no matter how fucked up it is. So yes, we are occasionally forced to help others, but it is not never ok, sometimes it is necessary.

Social situations don't govern action, you govern action. You never have to help any one. You see someone bleeding out you can keep walking if you want. Also I don't know what your schooling has been like but I've never been force to help any one, group or otherwise if they fuck up its their problem not mine. My point though was more about from a legal perspective, ie social security, universal health care, ect.
