The War in Iraq has been over for years. We spent the last 4 years and billions of dollars training the Iraqi nationals to be their own military. Now we might save a few million dollars, but its drops in a barrel compared what we spent.

Not to sound selfish or anything but how come we spend our money to help other nations build up their army that MIGHT attack us in the future?
Hell, we're broke enough and I don't see other countries helping us out with our debts?
PS: I just got back from football so I might sound like an ass.. lol

The invasion of Iraq while justifiable was conducted as a unilateral move by the US so we're left with the bill.
We're still in Iraq and Afghanistan because we created a power vacuum. There is no government in these places. Whatever is there is only there as long as we're present and propping it up. This comes from the fact that most of the area is rural in nature and don't care about much besides their goat and religion. So any organized group has a massive advantage in taking power. Most organized groups have extremist ties so we stick around trying to hold things together while teaching what little groups of people care about how to do that themselves.
The war in Iraq and Afghanistan is over if you look at this as a traditional war, but since we haven't had a traditional war since WWII I'd argue the war in both countries is part of a war on terror and as long as there is a threat of terrorist controlling the area then the war isn't over.
No matter how you look at it we can't leave the area and won't for many years because if we do we'll get a worse situation than we had to begin with. We have to build a nation out of nothing. Which has only ever been accomplished by people in that nation or multilateral action by the world. The US has the resources to accomplish this, just like it has the ability to remain the most powerful state in the world, but that will depend on how the US uses its money. Right now we run the world and the world is ok with that. They want it. We protect the shipping lanes, provide forces for their security, make trade easier, help maintain peace, ect. We spend massive amount of money on the world every day. Iraq is nothing compared to that. The problem we face ultimately is will we put our money in the social programs at home or are we going to maintain our global power and finish Iraq.
I support the wars but I wish we had more other states supporting us to help with the costs. We can handle the costs, obviously we're having money problems but that stems from the fact we cut taxes and upped spending and then got hit by an economic down turn. The downturn is a natural event in a capitalist system and we were due for it, we just didn't know when it'd come.
Google your view point is that of a realist in political theory. I too am a realist but at this point the costs to us to just cut and run would be greater than the money we'd save.
