I was thinking about getting this laptop for Christmas:
Newegg.com - Acer Aspire AS5739G-6959 NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T6600(2.20GHz) 15.6" 4GB Memory DDR3 1066 320GB HDD 5400rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GT 130M - Laptops / Notebooks
Any thoughts? My budget is ~$800, and that one is $750. It was only $699 a few days ago, so hopefully it will go back down in price before the holidays... hopefully.
If you know of any better laptops for said price, I'd love to see a link to them.

Acer monitors are great quality and have a wonderful lifetime.
If for no other reason at all get it for the monitor.
The specs are great to.
Just remember you will need a laptop fan attachment (Find them at walmart for like $30,) if you plan on using for gaming or excessive use.
Just read the comments, CCleaner, Defraggler, and C dive Clean-up are necessities. Disable Auto Indexing. Along with the UAC and it will work great.

I would go for a Macbook.
Maybe walmart will have a Black Friday sale? XD
Macbooks for 800 dollars Yo.
If not, that laptop is fine.

I already do all those things. I'ma pimp the shit out of it. I don't think I'll be doing any gaming outside of Steam games. I'm mostly using it as a portable Apache server so I can program on the go. I don't have enough time at home anymore to finish any big coding projects.
But I'm torn. For $250 cheaper, I can get the same thing with a downgraded memory card.

Isn't that a really small screen though?
- 02 Dec. 2009 02:19pm #12
For a laptop, it's average. Resolution is big. But IDC for a huge screen size. I just want the specs to have it run fast.

Yeah, but I also want to be able to run Team Fortress 2, among other Steam games. I have a fuckton of the games, but can't run them on my desktop.
It would mostly be used for coding, but I'm a gamer, mind you.
And it's the "mostly" that's keeping me from investing in a billion dollar graphics card. Arg. I'll prolly end up getting the $500, and just buying the graphics card separately if I so need it.

Hmmm... Well my suggestion would be to not invest in a acer laptop, I have bought one and the motherboard got fried a couple of weeks later. The warranty was up because it was up and I was out like $800.
Acer was also caught for putting used parts from broken computers and selling them in "new" acer computers (mainly laptops of theirs)...
I would suggest investing in a computer from best buy. I recently got a computer with two GB's of ram and 250 Gb's of HD space for $300. Or maybe a netbook if it is just for programming on the go.
Netbooks are slower, I bought one and tested it and it ran incredibly slow. But they are good for simple tasks like writhing text files in notepad or something...

I personally cannot stand Acer computers, so I would say no.
- 06 Dec. 2009 06:04am #17
do it. you know they say that acer is the bst kind of laptop to get. I have an older acer, but it's good. I think you should get it.

I'm contemplating getting a custom-built Vaio, since Sony makes it, I know it'll be bitchin' in quality. It's $880, but the graphics card is badass. And has a much better processor.

Standard Capacity Battery (VGP-BPS13)
CD/DVD playback/burning
4GB (2GBx2) DDR2-SDRAM-800 (Reg. price $20.00)
Microsoft® Works
Custom Engraving
ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4650 graphics with 512MB dedicated video RAM
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T6600 (2.20GHz)
16.4" VAIO Display (1600x900)
Genuine Microsoft® Windows® 7 Home Premium
320GB SATA Hard Disk Drive (7200rpm) (Reg. price $30.00)
$797 + ~$70 shipping
That includes a ~$40 student discount, so IDK what it would be for non-students.
It's pretty pricey, but that's to be expected of any Sony product. The graphics card's worth ~$200 which is the only reason it seems worth getting. The cheapest I'd be able to get that card on any other laptop would be like $800, and the brand would prolly be shitty.
You can build one yourself here: https://www.sonystyle.com/

Thanks. Don't see anything wrong with this, looks great.
I would suggest buying it...

I'd checked a model before, but checking again, the only models they have (without getting into the $1000+) with a good processor have crappy graphics cards.

Yeah, when I have a job and the like, I'll definitely have a top notch computer, since most my income and hobbies are computer-based. But for the time being, basic games (Steam) and anything that can run Apache is good enough.
- 07 Dec. 2009 01:18am #25
Well I assume that this computer will be good for that.
Have you checked out best buy as well? I got a pretty good Toshiba from there for $400 (Included a 2 year all around warranty from Geek Squad).

Yeah, but out of the four most important minimums (imo), it doesn't meet any of them.

The Best Buy store here sucks. Everything's epic overpriced. But it's also a new store, so that's kinda expected.
