How I Taught Myself to Code in Eight Weeks
I'm about to undertake this. I expect to progress a bit quicker since I have some coding experience.
Still it's a interesting method and article. Seemed like it might be helpful to people trying to learn to code and participate in the community.

Learn To Code Quickly

I always found it easier to learn by coming in with an idea of something you want to make and just jumping in. This doesn't work for everyone, but I've known a lot of people who just get into a phase where they become too dependent on tutorials overtime as opposed to Google and documentations.

I totally agree with this. When I've attempted to simply, say, learn a language via a tutorial with no real goal for application of the knowledge it seems sort of pointless. Sure, you learn the syntax of SQL and how to mess with databases, but what if you have no database? And say you complete the tutorial, what do you use SQL for?
I think that's what gave so much allure to Gaiaonline as a development and exploitation platform for all these years.
Not only is there the whole web development side for learning to exploit things, but there's picking up Actionscript by reading the code for flash games and then certain scripting languages for taking advantage of those exploits with a graphical interface.I don't get tired.

This is how I self taught. Start with basic projects, learn basic things, and as you progress, you start thinking more about optimization and automation and simplifying tasks, which leads to more advanced projects and coding concepts. It progresses rather naturally.
Only downside is if you don't come up with some ideas, you won't be familiarized with what others may already know by your coding level. A good tutorial would be well-rounded.
But I still go the way of learn-it-as-I-need-it.
