applying myself?

So I used to do some programming and I've taken 2 classes. I don't want to forget the java I've learned, so how do I apply it to something actually useful? i've learnt a good amount but what can I really do to integrate it into a program. we basically studied object-oriented programming, classes, inheritance, methods, and all that jazz. Are there any good IDEs out there? I've heard of netbeans, jikes and gcj. I don't know what to use really. also any gui tutorials out there for java? i passed the AP exam with a 4, but I had barely a B in that class because I didn't do any work. if i were to retake now i'd probably get a 3 or less :eek:
