I've played oth at the request of Raivu and they are legit. The first one is a little bugy but the second uses a rom of an actual game and works really well. the server is full sometimes though.
Have you guys messed with such things? They are fun if you have the time. If people really get into the second one I don't see why we couldn't set up our own server.

Nah, I have never tried a Pokemon MMO, which one would you suggest to start on?

Go for the 2nd. It'll feel more like what you are used to. Only downside is the server is full at times. I've never had that issue with the first one but the first one is harder to play because of some bugs.

I played the second one for a while but had no one to play with so I got bored. I think I originally started playing when team rocket was still making recruiting threads on /vp/.

It's only a matter of time before they get shut down under copyright claim, so I wouldn't invest heavily in them. Especially not monetarily. I contacted Nintendo personally when I was making a Pokemon engine, and they specifically said they don't license third parties to use their content unless they are a registered game company with an established history of big-name game publications. I imagine they don't want another "Mario Is Missing!" in other words, but they take their copyrights seriously. They certainly wouldn't allow it without royalties, which these sites don't pay.
If anyone ever finds one that is licensed, I'd love to hear about it. Not only to see a licensed Pokemon MMO that somehow isn't advertised across the entire planet 24/7, but also to see what game history the company would have. If the MMO is good, it stands to say they may have good taste in past developments.
But again to my knowledge, no company does exist that has a third party Pokemon game license.

That's part of the reason I didn't get too hard core into playing it.
Plus it's basically just replaying Fire Red with the ability to battle other people. Still fun though if you have people to talk to.
If I remember correctly though, people were hunting lucky eggs left and right and taking IVs and EVs super seriously.
All hail kitty pig.

I'm waiting for Disney to buy out the GameFreaks rights. It seems inevitable. They're both insane money grubbing whore franchises, so it seems only a matter of time.

Game freak would never be bought out by Disney since it's a Nintendo exclusive title. Nintenduld be an idiot to sell the rights considering people buy pokemon like candy.

Nintendo selling the Pokemon license would be Nintendo shutting down. It's not going to happen, unless Nintendo is already shutting down.

It'll stay alive, because they didn't create it. They just found a way to link your rom to a big Server.
All the features like Adding, Partying, HUD layout, Login Screen, etc. Those are all just on their server, not the game itself.
They've been up and just growing constantly with over 150,000 people now playing on the regular.
I've also never run into a full server, oddly enough.
The Character Customization rocks.
You can edit
-Hair/Color
-Eyebrows/Color
-Beard/Color
-Eyes/Style/Color
-Shirt/Style/Color
-Pants/Color
-Shoes/Color
They've also got a looot of other items you can get for your character too, like Goggles, Wings, Gloves, Glasses, Hats, Packs, etc.Last edited by Raivu; 16 Feb. 2013 at 12:32pm.

I think so. The download just has a client and a few folders. A ROM folder and then of course the info to connect the client to the server.
You just have to download the Roms (FireRed and SoulSilver), put them in the ROM folder, run the client and you're connected.
The only reason you'd need the SoulSilver rom too is if you want your pokemon to follow you while you play.☜(* x *)☞FOOL ON COOL GENERATION

The best part is, they have premium "donator" items you can wear and customize, but you can also win them at the Game Center, and in contests and what not too.
At the Game Center in Celadon, two outfits you can win is a Tuxedo and the Rocket uniform☜(* x *)☞FOOL ON COOL GENERATION
