Sounds like one of the older terrain generators in the beta where there would be those huge hills, for anyone that doesn't know what it is:

Amplified is a World Type that was introduced in snapshot 13w36a. This World type consists of many large hills and mountains which dwarf even the extreme hills seen in all other world types. It is unclear if the skylands effect that this world type brings on is intentional or not, or simply a limitation of the minecraft world generation. This world can be particularly hard to survive in since caves hardly generate in the hills and it's quite easy to find yourself in a situation where you can fall to your death due to all the cliffs made since the world is trying to go up to the absolute limit of how high blocks can go. Certain biomes (ie. swamplands and oceans) may see little to no change while pretty much all others do. The world type is currently WIP.

Yeah, essentially the terrian is giganticly high. Lots of floating platforms, the world is skewed mountains. As much terrain atop mountain as there is on flat land. Lots of caves and loops and floating areas. Really pretty. But hard to navigate.

The random gravel killed it for me. Also it really does feel like beta minecraft when it would make these type of formations but not to this extent but it might be because I play on the pro thing xp
