First 30 minutes all the guys are over there and all the girls are over there, save for the few groups of friends that stick together. Music is playing(generally club/rap crap). Eventually kids go out on the dance for and do whatever they think is dancing, lots stand and talk.

semi-formal dance equals same as every other dance with girls in dresses and in heels they will take off after ten minutes of bitching about having to wear; guys wear slacks, collar shirts, and jackets they ditch as soon as they get in. Some will wear ties, all that do will eventually loosen them and unbutton their top few buttons and roll up their sleeves.
