Science is morally neutral, much like religion. They can both be used for good and evil.
The inverse of you argument is true. Science engineers incurable diseases to be used as weapons, religion motivates people to devote their lives to taking care of the poor.

That represents one group of people not the religion. Just as one religion does not represent all religion.
People are stupid, but religion isn't necessarily stupid. Same is true of science, philosophy, and anything else an idiot might use to justify foolish behavior. It's cool if you're not religious, but it's not cool to act like people that are or that religion itself is stupid. When you do that you're the same as the people that called you immoral.
The real purpose of religion is to help us to not be dicks to each other. People forget that. Religion isn't even necessarily at odd with science, people just make it out that way and end up cause everyone to get butthurt over nothing.
