Cancer doesn't stop people from being awesome? It's a debilitating, depressing and hampering illness. Not to mention it isn't curable, it only can be treated.
And while I agree that suicide can't really be justified per se, there are some cases where it's more or less understandable. I mean, I don't approve, but with a little practice of empathy, you could perhaps see why they were "forced" to do so, so to speak.
Isonyx also gave an example of extenuating circumstances--walking the plank. Also if I were probably about to be tortured to death or something of that nature.
Suicide can't be looked at in a black & white perspective. Like you though, generally I agree that it's cowardice.

Three people in my family have died or are dying of cancer. It has not stopped them from being awesome. Are they jumping tall building in a single bound? No, but they are the definition of awesome. They refuse to give up, they always have an optimistic outlook, an are generally an example of what we all wish mankind was.

Hey, sorry for your loss man.
No doubt, there are many amazing people who have suffered through and kept on fighting.
The way I look at it though, there are many who are drugged up just so they can endure the pain for another few months or years, I'm sure many of them wouldn't view their lives as awesome. Their lives are sad, it's a tragedy that these things happen.
