My desktops are always so boring, just some form of inspirational picture of nature as the background, and icons. It's too much work customising it.

Rainmeter - one of many desktop optimization utilities. Thought I'd share this one because comparatively it's more prevalent.
Keep in mind that this can be a CPU/memory hog at times. But that shouldn't be a problem if you have more than 1* GB of RAM and/or a decent processor.
I'm reluctant to use it because I think my desktop is already sufficient so as such it would pretty much be overkill.

I can vouch Rainmeter. It's only using 3mb of RAM for me, but I also disabled everything I didn't actually want.
Mostly use it to meassure CPU/RAM/SWAP usage. Upload/download rates are neat, and so is it telling my me IP address. Of course not things you need Rainmeter for, but such quick references.
I think it can also tell you the temperature of your GPU. I should look up how to enable that. Good for gaming machines.

I printscreen'd a music video. Yeah, I am that awesome.
I love JOP and TheBuffNerds. Each of those guys in that picture spit fire and the guy in the chair shoots the best videos.

I tried spitting fire once.
It involved drunkenly spitting gem clear at a lighter.
Let's just say... let's just not talk about it.
