The Dubstep craze originated in Jamaica in 1998 by 2 teenagers playing with noises in their garage on a computer.
It recently got popular when Deadmau5, a house producer, wanted to incorporate more disorientation as a tribute to the old forgotten Jamaican style, which was picked up by people such as Rusko, Nero, etc. and it's just evolved and spread from there.
Now we have hardcore dub, metal dub, ambient dub, hip hop dub, rap dub, jazz dub, etc.
