This guide requires your iPod to be jailbroken.
If you need help jailbreaking ANY apple product running iOS 2 or later, feel free to send me a PM.
SSH is a Remote Administration protocol present in nearly all modern UNIX operating systems.
With a quick download, and a few minutes of your kind, you can use the OpenSSH tool to remotely manage your files, tunnel through firewalls, or execute shell commands.
Step 1: Preparing your i-Device
Double check to make sure your i-Device is jailbroken, and turned ON.
Connect to the same network as whichever computer you will be using to access it.
Goto Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi > *your network* > DHCP.
Right down the IP Address listed for your device.*
* Please note that depending on your router and ISP, this IP address may change. Make sure to double check before you attempt SSH'ing into the device again.
Step 2: Preparing your Computer
Double-check to make sure you are connected to the same network as your device.
Download PuTTy from here:
PuTTY Download Page
And run it.
Step 3: SSH into your device
With PuTTy running, wake your device, and make sure it stays awake until otherwise noted.
Copy the IP address into the appropriate box, make sure the port is set to '22', and make sure the connection type is set to 'SSH'.
Hit 'Open' in PuTTY, and a box will come up about a security breach. Ignore it and continue.
You should have a terminal box asking for a name, type in 'root'.
Next it will ask for a password. The default password for all iOS devices is 'alpine'.
NOTE: When typing in your password, nothing will be displayed in the terminal box. This is normal.
Congratulations!
You now have SSH access to your iOS device.
Please note that not all bash commands are available in all shells.
For example, in iPod Touch 4g, the 'v' command does NOT work, however 'vdir' does.
