Cover letters, resumes, nice clothes, and actually being professional all get you jobs. I worked in the city government for awhile, was a TA and ran the planetarium, and a guitar teacher at bestbuy all because I talked to someone, handed them a resume, and looked like someone they'd want to hire. Guitar teacher bit did not involve nice clothes or hair brushing, but this was because I made sure I looked like the people that already worked there.
