So I've recently gone and bought myself an old PS1 on ebay and have started a little PS1 game collection. I know, I know I could just emulate but where's the fun in that.
Right now I'm playing through Final Fantasy 6, I've replayed most all of the later FF titles at this point but I've always been put off with 6 and the earlier ones because of the 2D graphics. I joined the gaming party a bit late and missed out on the SNES and the other consoles of its generation so PS1 was basically where I started my gaming journey. Because of this the blocky 3D poly games really resonate well with me but despite that I finally took the plunge and started playing FF6 and I've got to say that I'm glad that I did! It's surprisingly fun. I guess that's no secret as it is considered but a large group of people to be the best FF game.
My goal really is to replay a load of the games I loved from my childhood and also to play some games that I might of missed out on too. So far my collection consists of FF6,7,8 and 9, Abe's Exodus (I've actually had this one the whole time), Metal gear solid, Legend of the Dragoon, Tombi 2 and Vagrant Story.
I also really want to get my hands on copies of Crash Team Racing, Digimon World, Koudelka and Jade Cocoon but I haven't got around to it yet.
I'm making this post for two reasons, the first being that I'm curious to know what other games I should add to my list. I'd love to know what games you consider masterpieces from the era and why. The second reason is hopefully to spark a conversation about replaying games. I'd love to know what games you either have replayed or really want to.
And to anyone who grew up in that era and hasn't considered replaying them, I'd highly recommend doing it. It's amazing how different the story can be looking at it from a new perspective.

PS1 Nostalgia Trip!

You know, I never played any of the Final Fantasy games. So, for someone who is completely new to the series, do you have any specific ones that you would recommend? I know there are, like, 1000 of them. Very confusing for someone who has never followed it.

The thing that confuses most people is that each number title represents an entirely new story set on an entire different world (though there are theories out there that will argue this). For example FF7 and FF8 are completely unrelated so you could easily play either of them without the fear of missing out on something. If they do a direct story sequel they usually keep the original number but add another, for example they did a direct sequel to FFX and it was called FFX-2. For the most part this means that it doesn't really matter which order you play them.
That being said I'd say FFX is a nice one to easy your way into the door with as it's not too complex and there was a HD remake on the PS3 & 4 so it's quite accessible too but I'm sure there will be some contrasting opinions on that.

Okay, I can wrap my head around that. Honestly I thought it was a continuous story line, you're right. If one of my friends doesn't already have FFX's remake for the PS4 I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. I feel like I'm missing out on this huge fandom and I just want to be in on it so bad. Thanks for the advice.

I've been looking for one of the original ps1's with the good audio connections.
Had some success with finding games thrifting.

You definitely should do it, I can't recommend anything more. I didn't think I'd enjoy it as much as I do.
And that's pretty cool, you can't really get PS1 games anywhere around here. We have a market we call the "car boot sale" once a week where basically people can show up in their cars, and set up little stalls to sell old stuff out the boot of their car. I'm assuming it's just a British thing but I could be wrong. Tends to be the only place you can spot PS1 games and chances are still pretty slim so ebay is normally the only option.
What games have you managed to pick up?

Nice, it's so weird to see how different the jewel cases look in other parts of the world. Over here ours look like this:

Thanks! Yeah, I'm still yet to complete Dragoon. I didn't even complete it when I was a child either. I never had a copy of it myself so my only way to play it was to borrow it from a friend but he was playing it too so I could only borrow one disk at a time. By the time I needed disk we had lost contact with each other so I never finished it.
I think it's going to be my goal at some point to play a drinking game where you have to take a drink every time you find a spelling mistake in the English port of it aha. Needless to say, there are so many errors.

Star Ocean 2 and Lunar 2 would be the games I totally suggest. Good luck getting Lunar for a reasonable price though.
All hail kitty pig.

I don't know who's interested but I thought I'd provide an update.
It took me a while longer than anticipated (mostly because I took a slight detour playing Crash team racing and the new Destiny DLC) but I've just completed FF6. I'm definitely glad I revisited it and I'm quite pleased that I can now mark it off my list. The story was compelling enough but the 2D graphics made it a real struggle for me to want to play it at times which is really weird because I'm more than happy to play horrific looking low-poly games so you'd think I'd be fine playing 2D pixel based games but apparently not.
At any rate I thought I'd let you guys know.

The Spyro games were really great imo. Year of the Dragon and the original specifically. They're fun, and good for people who like collectathon games like Banjo Kazooie.

Yeah, the Spyro games are on my list, not sure when I'll get round to acquiring them though. I think I'm played the 3rd one the most as a child but I never had my own copy of the second one. I only ever rented it or borrowed it so that's the one I'm more interested in playing.
As an update to the original post I'm not working my way through Legend of the Dragoon. Just got to the second disc. So far it's been quite enjoyable even if it feels like every piece of dialog has been converted using google translate. I'm going trk my way through this, catch up on some of the current gen games and then I'm looking to get my hands on a copy of Jade Cocoon for the PS1.

So it's been a while since my last post in this thread and I've been quite busy. I'm happy to say I'm still playing PS1 games.
I've completed Legend of the Dragoon, Jade Cocoon & Castlevania: SOTN and I'm currently working my way through Metal Gear Solid 1 (I made a bet with a friend of mine that if he completes FF7 I'd get through MGS1) and then I'm going to move on to Digimon World. I used to love it as a child but never quite made it to the end.
I've got quite a backlog of games to get through so I'm going to try to get through that but when I've managed it I'm looking to get my hands on a copy of Tombi!/Tomba! as I really like the second one but never managed to play the original and then give the the original Resident Evil trilogy a go as well as Dino Crisis (I don't know much about Dino Crisis so it could be terrible I just remember everyone talking about it).

And what did you pay for your old PS1? I will explain why I am asking. I have an old one too. But I do not use it. And it would be great if I find someone interested to buy at a very symbolic price. I am even ready to make a further discount to cover the delivery costs to the customer. I am located in UK postcode Manchester. Please contact me in private messages if you are interested in
