I don't know if I buy that it's all DDOS, I think influxes of new users and people constantly trying to log in on top of whatever DDOSing was done is probably what kept things down and now we're looking at them having to try and get things running as a ton of people keep trying to get on.
I was pretty disappointed by the whole thing since I got a PS4 & Destiny for Christmas and was left out in the cold.

I read a report about what is actually going on with Sony's servers and it was heavily implied that they only had one server effected by whatever was done and that when they took it up another server tried to compensate and ended up crashing. This then just repeated until they pulled everything offline themselves.
I don't know that they're terrible at security. It would help if they ran their own stuff but ultimately they're just a bigger target because they have their fingers in so much stuff.

Sony has had the same guy in charge of security forever. through like two major security breaches now. I wish I had that kind of job security.
