If money is an issue, get a Wii. It's the cheapest. It's also very easy to backup your games onto a usb hard drive via homebrew. If you're looking to play games from older systems, there are also homebrew emulators for various old game systems. If you're curious about Wii homebrew, there's always the WiiBrew Wiki site. I don't have either an Xbox or a PS3, so I don't know much about those systems, except that Microsoft likes to get very ban happy with people who mod their consoles (and even some people who didn't mod them). Last I heard, there was a mass-banning spree just recently with Xbox. A lot of my friends complain about how a lot of people on Live are douches anyway.
