Please read carefully as there are issues with Wii System Menu 4.2, so be careful if you follow through with this. If you don't know what you're doing, you could brick your console. Also, please know that this is for backup games. Piracy is illegal, duh.
I have my Wii running on System Menu 4.0 with a 1 Terabyte hard drive hooked up to it, so I know for a fact that this works. If I had a digital camera, I'd post some screenshots of it, but I haven't bought a camera yet. Maybe after a paycheck or two I'll get an inexpensive one.

i use my 1tb harddrive with backups......
also dont update to 4.0 use my guide to put homebrew on
it to play burned cds or mp3s and dvds

I have an external 1Tb drive for my backups, and it works just fine with 4.0. The link to the guide I posted is more comprehensive and also shows what to do for system 4.0 & 4.1 as well as how to update an already-hacked Wii to 4.2. However, upgrade to 4.2 at your own risk, as 4.2 hasn't been hacked yet (to my knowledge).
