Well, this is a guide to any Final Fantasy game. This is just some general rules for the Final Fantasy games. For specified guides based on a certain game, look for it on a walkthrough website like GameFAQ's.

Tip 1: Save WHENEVER you can!
In all Final Fantasy games, you will face a boss on your path. These bosses can sometimes be unexpected, so save whenever you see a save point (or save on the World Map when you are supposed to go to a certain place.)
Tip 2: Level, level, level!
As mentioned above, you will face a boss in the game. These bosses usually range in difficulty, and some may seem tough for your current progress. The main reason for this is your level. You get stronger and have more health points as you level, which is key in fighting a boss. You will know you're probably the right level when it becomes tough for you to level while killing monsters.
Tip 3: Strategize.
Whenever I know I am going to fight a boss, I usually save and then go into battle with it. Fighting a boss with no plan may seem weird, but it can help you. You can learn the elemental strengths and weaknesses of a boss, and you can learn what type of status effects (if any) the boss may inflict on you. Also, the bosses usually follow a pattern of moves. They may use Oil before using Firaga, or they may cast Blind before Berserk. Watch for these patterns and protect against them.
Tip 4: Money and items.
When you kill monsters, you receive money from them. This money is usually spent on weapons and items. The money can be even used as a weapon, with money throw attack offered in some Final Fantasy games. I suggest getting money whenever you can, doing little side jobs or selling armor you no longer need. When buying items, look for status healing items. I usually carry around ten of these, unless I am fighting a set of monsters or a boss that uses a certain status effect in their attacks. Carry lots of potions, hi-potions, x-potions, ethers, mega ethers, mega potions, elixirs, mega elixirs, anything that will restore HP and MP. Even though your person may be too high a level to get a real help, you can use the potions to stall for time, or keep your people healed all the way for stuff like Gravity.
Tip 5: Know your role!
In Final Fantasy games, your character has a main role (or job as referred by certain games). The main types are Warrior, Mage, Summoner, and Healer. Make sure you pay attention to which is which. Keep Ethers on your Mage, Healer, and Summoner, and keep potions on your Warrior, as he will be the main target. Keep the magic users in the back, where they will be hit for less. Keep Warriors in front, where they will deal the most physical damage. As to certain jobs, read the descriptions and use common sense to see where they should be placed.
Tip 6: Weapons and Armor.
In Final Fantasy, weapons and armor play a major role in fights. Monsters in certain areas are usually weak to an element, and use a certain element. Using common sense, you can buy weapons and armor that suit the current fighting style. When fighting Ice monsters, wear Ice resistant armor and use fire/flame weapons.
