People realized they could make money off of fishes and then they started doing that dumb thing where they all undercut each other in prices hoping to sell as quickly as possible without caring about profit they could have made if they all just waited.

I made profits from selling them once ... I earned around 12mil from it

Fishes sell for alot because they're used as alchemy components.

I got a fish in the daily chance on a mule and was able to sell it for quite a bit. I don't know much about the whole Alchemy thing, but I did see people talking about needing them for recipes and shit in the forums.
