Photoshop Problem

Okay, so I want to make a rectangle with feathered edges but every time I have to make it with the custom shape tool and create a path, so it's hard for me to make it the exact size I want it. I cant just feather it in the selection tool. Every time I try to feather with the selection tool, it looks fine, but when I go to fill it in the fill spills out like a gradient.

You're using a "soft" brush. Meaning, it goes where it wants. There should be an option to make a rectangle... it should have something like "edge" or "feather" that can be changed to make it more exact.

That makes no sense lmao.
I'm using the Rectangular Marquee tool to make my selection and in the toolbar I set the feather radius. That's all I do and it comes out like that. And it ONLY happens when I FEATHER. I can use the Elliptical Marquee tool and it fills it within the selection but only when I feather the selection does it leak out.

Because you feathered it!

Set the feather to 0px then fill it in and it will not be like that.

Feather = not what you're looking for.

Draw a rectangle, go to Select > Modify > Smooth

Plug in values til you get the effect you want.

Oh I see now. Feathering is supposed to do that and smoothing actually rounds the corners. Thanks Kain.

When you feather, the selection only shows the area that has 50% or more selected (opacity wise).

It tricks a lot of people, you're not the only one.

Yeah, I've just never seen the smooth function before. And when I thought feathering was like chamfering or something :/
