It's specifically pixel art that's needed.

I really want to get into this kind of art.
Give some more kind of examples of what you'd like to see?

Closest thing I've made is my icon. I don't know if that's what you're looking for though. Also tbh the bigger the sprites are the easier they are trk with for me since I'm just getting into pixel art.

Just Google Fakemon sprites or PokeFake. Whichever. Those are examples, but it's not limited to that. I'm hoping for something evolution-based, but preferably where the evolutions can branch out.
Actually, I might use Chao if the community prefers.
But ultimately just anyone who can edit sprites will have a useful talent to help create a wide variety of little pets.

Here's my first sprite
If you have a more specific idea, I could try

If it's just Chao, I could probably do the entire thing myself. I used to be a pixel artist. I did a little work with Chao. Mostly just recolorings. But nowadays I could just write a program that can generated the colors automatically, which might be what I end up doing.

It would be super cool if I could help with some of the sprites
And I'm not even the legal age to be paid for work

No, I can do the recoloring with an algorithm. I'm hoping they can be altered in some minimal way. Like evolutions of sorts. If you ever played Sonic Adventure 2, you should be familiar with many of the different Chao evolutions. Hero, Dark. And then how raising specific stats changed their shapes. It's really just the various shapes I need, not the coordinating colors. Though it should still be colored in the same palette as the original so that I can use the same color-changing algorithm to generate any color automatically. But yeah. Just the shapes. Similar to the ones in SA2. If they can match the shapes from SA2 exactly, that would be freaking amazing, since I'm very familiar with that system. But really anything at all works. As long as there is a lot of evolution-style variety.

I've played some sonic game for GBA like 8 years ago, I don't remember any evolutions though so it's probably not what you're talking about.
I have played a ton of pokemon though so I get what you mean about evolving after certain levels.
I'll give it a shot, but one more question, are there just going to be one thing with a lot of different evolutions or a variety with not as many evolutions?
- 16 Feb. 2013 12:08am #19
The GBA version didn't have the evolutions. The console versions did.
I'd say to aim for a middle ground. As many variations-per-level as there are levels. I'd say maybe 3 would be an amazing start, so that would be 1 + 3 + 9 + 27 = 40 different sprites. But that would really be an end result goal. I think with that many, I'd be able to finish the entire concept. Maybe for testing purposes just 2 levels.
The way it worked with evolutions on Chao is you raised various stats of theirs. Like running, power, flying, swimming. You always started with the base, little blue guy, which I can provide a sheet for if you want to do this. After a certain amount of time, he'd evolve. Depending on how you raised his stats, it changed how he evolved. If you raised them all equally, his evolution would look pretty much the same. If you raised mostly running, he'd have spikes on the back of his head. If you raised mostly power, he'd have larger arms and a more protruding head. If you raised mostly flying, he'd have horns. Etc., etc. Then after this first evolution, there was a second (albeit silent) evolution. It worked the same way. If you didn't change his stats much, the appearance didn't change. If you raised mostly running, the head shape would change. Like if you had one already raised in running, his spikes would get larger. If you had one raised in flying which you raised in running the second time around, it its horns would curve a certain direction. And so on and so forth.
I can pull up pictures of the 3D models for these Chao if you would want to make replicas of the original Chao in sprite form.
The game did two levels with 4 stats each, so it's 1 + 4 + 16 = 21 sprites. Minus the original Chao you'd use as the base, would be 20 sprites.
There are different poses a Chao can be in, but I think those could come later. For the sake of getting this off the ground, I think just 20 sprites in a single pose would be an achievable goal that could be beta tested easily enough.
So lemme know if interested, and I'll pull up screenshots for the various evolutions and link the default pose sprite for the Chao.

I'm interested
But I can't start yet because I'm going to a restaurant 30 minutes away
I'll definitely be studying the screen shots in the mean time though of you can provide them to me

Chao Island - Sonic Adventure 2 Battle - Second Evolution
The ones on the left are the first evolution (e.g. Swim, Fly, Power, Run). The ones on the right are the ones on the left but with another stat added to them.
You can ignore the ones that have two stats added (e.g. Fly/Run+Swim), and the ones that have "Normal" instead of a stat. Just the ones that are Neutral / (Fly|Power|Run|Swim) / (Fly|Power|Run|Swim), and the ones that are Neutral / (Fly|Power|Run|Swim) without a second stat too.

Okay, cool.
I don't feel like I could do a well enough job of copying these though
If you're going for quality (and you probably are xD) I'm not your guy, for those little guys.
When you get to others like "custom Pokemon, monsters" I'd be more confident with that, even if you don't accept anything I make
Also, I tried two of the ones that I just realized weren't on the list you wanted lol(using the base)
I was surprised that just adding little things like that could ruin it so much haha
- 16 Feb. 2013 04:33am #24
Pokemon are fine too. I haven't really chosen anything in stone yet. If you can set the Pokemon-esque things to evolve in similar patterns (it branches, and each branch branches), I can use that. But ultimately I am looking for quality. It's something that'll have an official LG stamp on it. But then again it could maybe just be placeholder until something really high-end is made. Whichever. Can't say without seeing it first, eh.

I don't mind giving it a shot when and if you have an idea of something specific. : o
Why not make it a community thing for now, we all contribute but have to have the sprites approved before they're used in anything.
That way we have something, you guys get free labor, and maybe in the event it gets popular or we get a decent sprite artist we could revamp them.
Like neopets, aywas, ect has done?
All hail kitty pig.
- 16 Feb. 2013 07:27pm #27
That's why I made this topic, to see what the community can make.
I know a huge chunk of the community is fans of Sonic though, so Chao might work. I might just be able to do the mods myself if no one else feels up to it. It'd take longer, but whatever. I just do them one at a time and work on the backend in the mean time.

Cool. If you think you can do it, that's fine. No pressure if not. I'll make a sprite sheet for you as a base and post it here when I'm done.
EDIT: Actually this'll work. Just make sure you don't change the color palette. I'll use an algorithm to do that automatically. All that needs to be changed is to shape. Keep the colors/shading the same.
Let's just start with one evolution. So let's make the eight Neutral/Type Chao on this page, that is the eight Neutrals that aren't Normal type. Just the shapes, they should all be cyan in the end.
