We expected nothing less from you.” Echoed a familiar voice through the TV monitor positioned in front of young agent listening diligently. There was a short pause from the tv and the voice of the older man returned. “Yes, the crime boss Adrian Sokolov was reported to be assassinated at approximately 40pm this evening in front of over ten of his subordinates. There were no witnesses and the shooter has yet to be identified.” The voice paused again and ruffling of papers could be heard through the speakers. “How you manage these killings in broad daylight is beyond me agent, but nonetheless, fine work, we confirm this mission as a complete success.”
“Thank you sir.” replied the young man.
“Though this may seem little rushed, we have your next mission prepared.”
“I understand sir, brief me?”
“This assignment comes straight from the secretary of defense. He has requested extra protection for his daughter who attends a public school located in Fort Worth Texas.”
“Shouldn’t he order extra protection from the secret service?” The agent asked curiously.
“We asked the same question Tony. He wants the protection to be discrete, he doesn’t want to startle his daughter or to raise unnecessary attention from the public. We’re the only organization that can provide this service under those circumstances, you should be able understand why you were chosen for this.”
“Sir, with all due respect, you can’t expect an alpha to babysit ca-”
“Are you questioning orders?” said the voice, cutting off Tony.
The room went silent.
“No sir, never.” he whispered
“Great, you will begin immediately, further information will be sent to Rita. Your plane leaves in two hours. ” Suddenly, the tv switched to white and gray static channel and the man’s voice disappeared. Leaving Tony sitting alone disappointed with his new objective.
Tony stood up and activated the watch on his wrist.
“Rita, mission status.” Tony spat, walking towards the exit of the small room he had been in, loosely fingering the identification card around his neck.
“Sir.” chimed a robotic female voice from Tony’s watch. “Our current objective is to fly to Fort Worth Texas. I have already occupied the appropriately living accommodations close to the school you will be attending.”
Tony paused and watched as sharply dressed CIA agent passed him in the narrow hallway he stood. He slightly cocked his head to the side in confusion, he thought maybe he heard the artificial intelligence wrong.
“Rita, did you say I would be attending a school?”
“I am an AI, I am not programmed to stutter.” replied Rita using a more human female voice.
“My mission was to monitor the daughter of the secretary of defense. Not attend a school. This is unacceptable. Please contact R immediately, I must speak to him again.”
“Impossible. R has cut off all communications for the time being, you know how secretive he can be. Besides, your mission has already been assigned and processed, you have no choice but to complete the mission.”
Tony sighed and rubbed his eyes, he saw this mission as nothing but an annoyance, he was an alpha, the highest ranking officer in the CIA. He was in a program only a select few could join, his training was worth 11million dollars and he had flawlessly executed countless missions ranging from information gathering to the assassination of a countries’ president. Why was he now expected to babysit a high school student?
“It’s not your place to question your orders Tony.” rang Rita. “You were only assigned to this mission because you fit the appropriate age group.”
“Stay out of my head Rita.” Replied Tony instantly. Though Tony didn’t want to admit, the AI was right, he must have been assigned this mission because of his age. Tony was the youngest member of the Alpha group, at 17 years old, he was something like a child prodigy, often called a genius by his peers.
“As you wish.” replied Rita unconvincingly.
Continuing to walk down the hallway, Tony ignored all of the stares of the lower ranks that passed by and made his way toward the elevator that would bring him to the first floor of the building. As he arrived at the elevator the line that formed in front of it broke open and allowed him to step in the front. Once the elevator opened, he stepped in alone and pressed the button heading for the first floor. The elevator slowly made it way it’s up from F12 and he pondered the thought of going to a normal school for the first time. Having the rare to chance experience how a normal teenager lived could prove to be interesting after all.
DING. The doors of the elevator glided open quickly as Tony reached the first floor of the building and stepped out. He was instantly surrounded by activity, the first floor of the CIA headquarters was busy as usual. CIA intelligence officers, field agents and all of other ranks were busy rambling around trying to get to their destinations. Rummaging through all of the chaos passing by him Tony reached the front desk and smiled at the old woman sitting behind it furiously tapping on her computers keyboard.
“Good morning Faye.” Tony smiled.
“Ah, hello sir.” she replied keeping her focus on her computer. “We have your plane already prepared and we have printed out the information you’ll need for living in Texas.” Faye looked up with a smile and handed Tony a Vanilla envelope and the wrinkles covering her face became even more defined. “We’re going to miss you here in Virginia, hurry back now, won’t you?”
“Of course Faye.” Tony laughed, taking the envelope from the shaking fingers of the old woman.
“I’m off now, see you later.” waved Tony dodging a running woman as he headed toward the exit.
Walking outside of the central intelligence agency headquarters located in Langley Virginia could be one of the most satisfying feelings you could ever receive, but it could always be your most terrifying. Whuldn’t want to feel like they’re in the loop, they’re staying one step above regular society, they know the dirty little secrets that the government try so desperately to hide? Though with every secret there’s always a bigger one buried, not knowing what is hidden in this world, now that’s a scary thing.
Tony wondered what secrets could be buried in this case as he waited for his chauffeur to arrive and take him to the private airport. He watched as the world span around him, as people continued there everyday life’s, parents going trk, children going to school, and wondered how complete ignorance felt and wondered if ignorance was really freedom. Glancing up he noticed there was no clouds visibly in the sky, a perfect day for flying. He hoped there would be no surprises in this mission. He didn’t like surprises, he was trained to always stay in control and know everything before it happen. Surprises were never good. Not for him.
Taking the envelope Faye handed him, Tony took the stack of papers out and began to memorize his new life. So my new name will be Tony Mild? thought Tony. I’m surprised I was allowed to keep my first name. Tony continued flipping through the stacks of papers, memorizing important details, such as his age, phone number, new address and past history. All of these things would be necessary if he wanted to begin a new life. Tony’s face suddenly curled up in confusion as he continued to read. What? Terrorist threaten the secretary’s daughter and demand nuclear weapons? Since when does the secretary even have access to nuclear weapons?
“Rita, terrorist?” whispered Tony. “Why is the secretary staying in Texas if he knows his family is being targeted?”
“Sir.” She replied. “He doesn’t have a choice, they have threatened to attack if they notice any suspicious activity and our intel suggest they are keeping a close eye on her. Also, we have satellite surveillance around the clock as well as phone taps over the entire state of Texas trying to locate these terrorist. We’ve yet to find anything.”
“Satellite surveillance huh?” Tony shrugged impressed and continued to read. “Whatever, I’ll take care of it.”
Finally as Tony began reading on information about Elizabeth, a black stretch limo rolled up and stopped in front of him and an old man sporting a very crisp black tux stepped out and opened a door for him. As Tony stepped in the smell of new leather floated around and he waited for the chauffeur to close his door before rolling down his window. The two exchanged small nods before the engine started and the old man began to drive. Tony put the papers back inside in the envelope and hid it in his jacket. It would be to dangerous to read while someone else was around. He would have to wait until he was on the plane. Until then, he would enjoy the car ride and the cool breeze the window let through.
It didn’t take long to arrive at the airport and Tony waited for patiently for the man to open his door. As he stepped out he was grateful that he wouldn’t have to go through normal flying procedures or even have to go through the trouble of walking into a building. No, this was a private airport and runway used for only those who are ranked Alpha in the CIA. Tony gave a another small nod to the man and he kindly returned the gesture and got back into his car to leave.
Tony watched as the limo drive away and started toward his plane. There was no one waiting to greet him, but he already knew which plane he would be taking. He felt small waves of regret wash over him as he boarded his plane, but they didn’t last. He would think of this mission as more of a vacation then anything. He doubted any terrorist would attack this woman and if they did, he knew it wouldn’t be anything he couldn’t handle.
Boarding the small cramped private jet, Tony choose the seat closest to the exit. As he sat down the pilots voice rang over the intercom.
“Hello, we’ll be arriving at the Dallas airport in two hours. Please, turn off all electronics until we’re air born.”
Tony turned off his watch to let Rita take a break. Now he could have his thoughts to himself. With a sigh, he leaned back and cleared his head. He took a few minutes to himself and peered out the window as the plane started to move. Slowly it ran across the run way and graduality began to pick up speed. Lifting off was a feeling Tony enjoyed, the feeling of being lightless he welcomed with a smile. The plane soon began to gain altitude and climb higher and higher until everything was out of view, he took a moment to stare into the clouds which we now clearly visible in the sky, he always felt the clouds to be calming, it reminded him of snow, of Russia. Though his last mission proved to be more difficult than expected, the landscape would forever be apart of Tony, in his heart. Something about the glistening ocean of white snow and the quiet calmness of Russia’s harsh unforgiving terrain was overwhelming. It would always be apart of him.
After his break and a small meal prepared by the one and only flight attendants, Tony took the envelope from his jacket and began to study. He would need to know everything about Elizabeth down to the last detail, including her likes, dislikes, favorite colors, tv shows, who she admired, who she hated and even what time she went to sleep. Tony felt amazed how someone’s whole life could be simply recorded on a few papers, how someone could so easily fool another just with the right information. Humans are too trusting. Hopefully he could gain her trust immediately and begin his monitoring smoothly, but having things go according to the plan rarely happened in the CIA. He would prepare for the worse. Then it hit him and he activated his watch.
“Rita, how long will I be staying in Texas?” he asked.
“Until directed otherwise.”
“Of course.” he spat, turning off Rita in anger. “Of course.”
